[Action required] Changes to being a verified creator: connect a custodial account

Dear Creators,

We’d like to inform you of some changes to Brave Creators and what it means to be a “verified creator”. Starting today, only creators who have a custodial account from a supported region connected to their Brave Creators account will be considered verified creators. In other words:

  1. In order to be considered a verified creator, you will need to have a custodial account connected to your Brave Creators account. Custodial account providers include Uphold, Gemini, and bitFlyer (in Japan).
  2. Your custodial account must be registered in a supported country for Brave Creators, depending on your account provider. (For example, Uphold accounts from Canada are currently supported, while Gemini accounts from Canada are currently not supported.) See “What if my region is not supported?” below for more.

What is a verified creator?

Being a verified creator means that when Brave Rewards users navigate to your registered websites and channels, they will be able to send you tips and contributions in BAT, and you will be eligible for monthly payouts. It also means Brave Rewards users in Brave will see a special blue check mark in their URL bar when navigating to your registered websites and channels. The check mark looks like this:

What should I do now?

If you don’t already have a custodial account connected to your Brave Creators account, we encourage you to do it now! You can start by logging in to your Brave Creators account at https://creators.brave.com. If you already have a custodial account connected, then no action is required.

What if my region is not supported?

  • Creators with no custodial account connected: You’ll still be able to connect a custodial account to your Creators account, but won’t be considered a “verified creator” just yet. The moment your region does become supported, however, you’ll automatically become a verified creator.
  • Creators with an existing custodial account connected: Your Brave Creators account will remain connected to your custodial account, but you will no longer be considered “verified” until your region is supported for your selected custodian. You can always switch custodians if your country is supported by another one. Once your region becomes supported, you’ll automatically become a verified creator.

While custodial options may be limited by region, we’re working on a non-custodial Web3 option without regional limitations! Connecting a Web3 address will allow you to receive peer-to-peer contributions from your fans. For example, users with Brave Wallet will be able to send you BAT tips directly from their Brave Wallet to your website/channel’s Ethereum or Solana address. More updates to come.

Why are there regional limitations for custodians?

Country support can change based on the needs of our custodial partners, or in response to observed fraud patterns. You can find a list of supported countries, here: https://support.brave.com/hc/en-us/articles/9884338155149

As always, thank you for being part of Brave Rewards and for creating the content you do.
