Aggregate Topic: Outdated Brave crashing on YouTube

Was previously crashing on 1.0.5000, now WORKING on 1.0.5005. No more crashes.
Thankyou so much. <3

Tbh I care less if there’s ads, I’d rather that then it crashing outright and forcing me to use another browser for anything to do with youtube.

Can’t stop the updates, without updating win7 versions directly. Also there non-youtube fixes and other fixes users won’t receive if we did so.

Well, that’s kind of the point. As it had been said, there would be no more updates or patches for those older versions and support was dropped. As such, even when things went wrong, none of you supposedly were going to take the time to work on fixes. Once it hits that point, especially to be sunsetted, it shouldn’t be impacted by any changes going forward. Much like they couldn’t update to newer Brave versions, they also should be cut off from any filter or other component updates.

I mean, if you’re saying you guys will constantly go back and keep trying to tailor things for these unsupported versions, then that’s good to know. It just seems a bit backwards in the long run and should come to be a point where it’s just too much time and effort to maintain. Or where does the line get drawn on building out extra support for the various code types?

In a perfect scenerio, we’ll do a maintence fix. Latest Brave-rust and other fixes. But would require more work and effort, which could be argued to be put into the current and upcoming Brave versions.

If it comes down to something like Youtube breaking, it would be better to just put up with ads on that site, than the entire browser crashing out like it was.

I think many users of the older versions would accept loss of that feature, rather than an outright crash, (especially as it was even crashing on embedded vids and google searches until manually globally disabling).

Thankyou for this though. My Youtube is currently working fine again, even with shields / ad blocking up. <3

Okay. Guess I’ll follow up with all of you later to get a better understanding. I knew to this point it’s been solidly by everyone that things like Sync, Rewards, and other such features would stop working if people didn’t update. I could swear it was also said to be the same with Shields, that they wouldn’t be getting updates to it and might lose out on protections on websites as time went on.

Anyway, awesome to see you went out of the way along with whoever else to make corrections so those on older can continue to use with no issues.

This might sound like a very stupit question, but is there any way to

  • have the code behind the component updates first detect which version is pinging for an update, then only grabbing/sending the update if it’s “compatible” or ignore it outright and have it read “up to date”
  • have the updates themselves identify which version it’s being used in, then ignoring anything “under this line” before version x.xx.xxx or something so there’s no further fine-tuning needed for future updates?

Don’t know if this makes any sense to you or if it’s even doable.

Any changes for detect would updates in the windows 7 build, which currently is the latest/only version. Stopping components updates would also be equally bad, since any adblock improvements will be missed (which would also need a update the win7 build).

tldr; any changes would require a change on the unsupported windows 7 build. The only thing changing is the component updates (lists). Which is where we can deploy fixes

I can confirm the same thing with no crashes whatsoever. I’m going to reinstate the Shields to block everything again globally.

For Me, 90% of the Reason Why i Enjoy Brave is due to Shields, 10% for UI and Speed…

I do not need Brave Rewards, wallet or New Chromium Features to be added…

Almost it’s Like Nothing is Needed Except Brave Shields, Just Brave Shields and If you can Support it which is Hard, It would be Great… Like @fanboynz Said, To Make the Shields Effective, they need to introduce Maintenance update like 1.47.187 Chromium 109, 1.47.188 Chromium 109, 1.47.189 Chromium 109 Whenever an update is Needed.

These Updates can be Silent and Since these updates are only For Shields Maintenance, No Changelog is Needed.

Absolutely fine with that. I think most people would recognise and accept that even core browser features (that require maintenance) would “stop working” or stop being effective at a certain point on an out of date version.
The same goes for missing out on future improvements, of course.

Insta-crashing the entire browser just upon visiting a website or search page is another matter, though! Those with their home pages set to anything with Youtube even got stuck on a crash loop lol. THAT should be prevented at least, even if it means loss of features.
I’ve never seen a browser just STOP working entirely on an older system, especially for a major website.

There’s alternatives that we can get for Shields not working (UBlock or whatever), for me and many others there was NO alternative / full fix to Youtube just crashing out the browser.

It seems with the “Components” updating Brave is fully working as before.
Thank you to those who took the time to help us, older versions and SO users to fix that issue.
That’s the reason for using Brave, the best internet browser IMHO.

@Mattches Thanks for the solution you gave me previously. I deleted data for both google and youtube under content settings and now youtube is working for me (with tracker &ads blocked) without any crashes.

I don’t visit plenty of sites but the ones I had bookmarked crashed, which include of course YouTube, Bing (yeah…), gamebanana and github. For Bing it usually crashed if it wanted to load an ad or a video/gif. For GB it was 100% the ads, must’ve been videos/animated. As for git, I can’t imagine what went wrong there.
I do admit, I have a fairly old PC with fairly outdated hardware, but I’ve been able to still use the same PC to play certain modern games, emulators and test some programs. But just wanted to make sure I added as many details as I could. For what it’s worth, as of April 6th, YouTube hasn’t crashed (yet).

I’d be strictly guessing at what caused the crashes to happen on any of those pages besides YT.
To provide you with some degree of relief, there’s been recent component updates mentioned here

And the behind the scenes of “why” it was happening

As of now, it seems like everything’s back to being stable for the older builds unless there’s still something funky on your end happening. In which case, it’d be advised to post

  • direct links to the sites in question
  • your brave version (found here brave://version/)
  • and what version of the components you have (brave://components/)

It’s a weird situation and yeah, sometimes people are running around wondering why it feels like the sky is falling and blaming anything they can think of when they simply aren’t aware of everything everywhere at once. In this case, it was your browser version and NOT your hardware or other software (like your OS; at least not directly). Thanks for taking the time to assist and leave some hearts for fanboynz

Any update on drag n drop crash issue on Linux?

We are using latest versions of both brave and our distro [Fedora, in my case] still facing the issue.

and also if any other sites crashes it may be because it has a YouTube video embedded somewhere in the site if so then just add the site to Shields down section just as how we did for YouTube and it will be fixed…

I gave up and got a win11 box big mistake now I have a new pile of problems.

Using windows 10/11 has no issues here, most WIndows users will be using the latest Brave builds on these versions of windows.

Thank you so much for fixing this on my android 6 phones (latest version of brave you guys offered on 6) as unfortunately For all those saying I should upgrade, unfortunately I cannot as my android version is the latest possible on my phone and brave stopped supporting android 6 a while ago. Worse still, I have several older devices (including my adjustable bed that I spent a lot of money on because of crippling back problems) that sadly use an app designed for android 6 and will not work on any newer android OS and the company went out of business so they never made a newer app, therefore if I get a newer phone my adjustable bed becomes worthless. For this reason I have to stay with android 6. With all that being said, now I can live to fight another day! I am to get fixes for this moving forward into the future I am hoping either with the help of AI programming or just people helping people that eventually someone will make emulators that will actually run older (or maybe newer) android version apps, but until then you really saved me some serious pain. On a lighter note, all 3 of my work PC’s (I am self employed, and work a minimum of 80 hours a week from my PC’s) which are all windows 10 pro, had no problems whatsoever this whole time, so I have to say you guys do excellent work! Kudos, and God bless you all who may have helped and worked to get this fixed!
