Brave is crashing on all my Win7 computers

Have an office machine and family room laptop. Both are running Win7, yesterday Brave crashed on both. Tried to uninstall are reload on the laptop and it says “no updates” and will not reinstall.
Any solutions, or is Brave dead for me.

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

Expected result:

Brave Version( check About Brave):

Additional Information:

@Nedwardo1956 Regarding the crashes, it’s hard to pinpoint exactly what might be causing the issue since Brave hasn’t received any updates for Windows 7 since January 2023. The only changes would be related to components like Shields. Beyond that then issue woudl be something changed on your device.

Unfortunately, Windows 7 is no longer supported. When you try to install Brave from the main site, it attempts to install the newest version, which isn’t compatible with Windows 7. You’ll need to download the last version that works with Windows 7 from GitHub: https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.47.186

To choose the correct installer:

  1. Use BraveBrowserStandaloneSetup.exe for Windows 64-bit.
  2. Use BraveBrowserStandaloneSetup32.exe for Windows 32-bit.
  3. Use BraveBrowserStandaloneSetupArm64.exe if you’re using ARM 64 architecture.

@Nedwardo1956 I also wanted to follow up and let you know that one of the developers, szilardszaloki, is looking into this issue since it seems to be affecting anyone on Windows 7 and 8. If you could check out this post: Brave does not launches, even after deleting User Data - #52 by szilardszaloki, it has instructions on how to generate some diagnostic logs.

Once you have the logs, you can tag him in your reply, and he’ll DM you to get the logs, which could help in finding a solution for everyone.

Happening to me, too, as of today. The window CTDs/disappears second after launch. When I open a private window, it takes considerably longer before it crashes, but the crash is inevitable. Even in private mode, it crashes immediately when I go to the Manage Extensions window.

I ran Brave in debug mode as instructed in that link and generated a log file, but it seems to have a lot of identifying information, so I am reluctant to share it until I clean it up. However, the command prompt has some interesting output:

[13192:7404:0912/132801.691:ERROR:profile_attributes_storage.cc(8

These are the lines of concern:

Failed to PNG encode the image
Could not decrypt and save Binance token info.

Seems like it could be malware of some kind trying to take a screenshot of something and send it to a Binance account, but failing.

I will attach the log later once I am confident I’ve removed all identifying information, but the file is huge, so I don’t know when I will get around to it.

@notworthy just a FYI, the reason why people weren’t instructed to just upload here is because it can contain some info as you mentioned. This is where the dev team is sending DM and having it shared in a way that nobody else can see it.

I just want to confirm that you’re using Windows 7/8?

If so, tag szilardszaloki so he can try to DM you (as users can’t initiate DM) and try to get you to share the log.

THANK YOU, Thank You, thank you!!
Downloaded and installed the above 64-bit installer and i’m back in business [minus all my saved links]
Funny, with another browser, my laptop was running hot, but back on Brave and it’s running much cooler.
Hope that the above installer will fix the desktop.

Brave is closing instantly if New Tab is NOT set to Blank Page.
If dashboard is selected, Brace closes instantly.
If the internet is disabled, dashboard turns on instantly and works.
Soon as the internet is enabled, Brave shuts off instantly unless new tab is set to Blank page again.

Has there been a fix or @Nedwardo1956 just got lucky with the old installer and its working fine now? If so , I could reinstall again … @Saoiray @szilardszaloki

I only replicated with no internet one. it didnt crashed without internet

I dont want to uninstall and reinstall. Other people said it happened again with windows 7.
If I reinstall I will lose all my passwords, links, data, etc etc.
There has to be some kind of patch Brave needs to make.
Just about everyone that has this problem it started all of a sudden on the same day.

Didn’t work, made it worse, now it crashes even with blank page setting.
I controled Z to changeit back and Brave works again, but only with blank page setting. Brave still crashes when dashboard is sellected for page.

@SalC It shouldn’t make it worse, as the steps above basically do the same exact thing: they set the new tab page to blank to avoid the code path where the crash happens. Out of curiosity: how do you set the new tab page from dashboard to blank? Do you go offline, set it to blank in brave://settings, and then go back online?
Thanks!

Could you also let me know the Windows version you’re using and Brave’s version from brave://version?

windows 7 on a laptop.
Brave version is 1.47.186

wont let me update.

Yes, that’s what I did

wont let me update.

You won’t be able to update, as Windows 7 is no longer supported.

FYI (in case you get a crash even after setting the new tab page to blank):

I didn’t have Brave News showing for a few years now.
The problem started the same day as everyone else, all of a sudden when I was in the middle of working.

Right, that’s most probably when server side changed the response format for one of the endpoints the browser calls — but it only calls this endpoint if you’ve opted in to Brave News (regardless of when this happened exactly).
