Brave suddenly crashed - won't reopen

watching a youtube video when brave suddenly shut down – had a few tabs open as well as a couple of other brave windows.

when I try to restart - it comes up for 2 to 4 seconds and shuts down.

I found the extension folder and deleted all extensions – no change in behavior – this is running on windows 7 so there haven’t been recent upgrades. Zero problems prior - it’s been running fine for months (years?).

I’m having the same issue on windows 7.
I know they don’t support it anymore but I need to get a password from the browser that I forgot about.

Edit: I managed to get it to stay open long enough to try a new profile by running it as an administrator. It took multiple tries but it seems the new profile works but a private window on the other profile still crashes.
I also removed the extensions from the folder and it still crashes on the main profile

Having same problem. Restore pages button up for about 1 second and does not perform- just closes. I went to Downloads and Right clicked on the Brave icon> Run as Administrator>Allow Changes to Computer? (yes)> then a pop-up says “The application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.” I was not able to get anywhere trying to find those things. Anyone have a course of action for me to take? I’m on Windows 7

I just joined to confirm I’m also having the exact same problem, was using Brave as normal and then probably one of these annoying forced stealth background updates happened and Brave crashed for no reason, no error message, nothing. Re-opening the application just crashes after 2 seconds, trying to open it via private window or using a new/guest profile lasts a bit more but still crashes after less than 1 minute. I’m forced to use Op*ra to even post this complaint, can’t even use any of my vital daily use accounts because all my passwords, bank data, work accounts everything was stored in the now bricked Brave. What a drag, why break what wasn’t broken?? FIX IT!!!

I am having this problem too. Windows 8.1
Using Chrome to post this.
Started happening this morning 08:00 London time.
None of the fixes in the principal thread work for me - Brave crashes immediately upon startup - #36 by Ren9722

Brave started working again at about 10:40 London time.
Just like that - no reason that I can see.
We just had a power outage for a few seconds, perhaps that gave it a kick up the backside?

Update 10:51 - It’s crashing again.

And now it’s stopped working again.

Can’t even open any website, instant crash upon opening the app itself.

I loaded the older version here, no crashing.

Lets see if this helps:

  1. Ensure Brave is closed (check task manager first).
  2. First, any changes, just create a backup copy of Brave-Browser folder in C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware. If anything breaks you can just copy it back.
  3. Delete the following folders: (these folder hold info on the last browsing session).
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Sessions
C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Default\Session Storage
  1. Restart Brave

Didn’t worked. Also the crash happens even on brand new profiles or guest accounts, it takes more time at around 1 minute.

I tried shutting off everything that i could think off. Deleted months of cookies, cache, site data etc… still it keeps crashing within 2 seconds after opening. No site is open btw. It opens up the default page and just crashes. (Btw, you keep it open and try turning off settings by simply just disconnecting your internet. As long as your not connected to internet, it wont crash and then you can turn some settings)

Any anti-virus/malware software installed/running?

Some basic testing in my old build with YT/Reddit and CNN.

I can confirm this, I disconnected my LAN cable and opening Brave didn’t crashed it. But as soon as I connected it back, instant crash.

As of today the issue remains, I haven’t been able to even access my vital accounts because all of it was already set up in Brave. This is unacceptable, guess it’s time to move onto a different browser, one that doesn’t forces updates that brick the whole thing without warning.

Took computer offline and was able to open brave – all my bookmarks were gone.
I had 7 windows open when it crashed and was able to open them all while offline - created bookmarks from them.

created a new profile - was able to drag the bookmarks to the new profile.

shut down all instances of brave then rebooted computer. Tried to open my first profile and it crashed immediately. Opened the new profile - did not try to open any website - just left it the brave window. Was looking good until it crashed in about a minute.

So still unable to use brave on my main machine.

Downloaded Vivaldi browser - they have versions that work with windows 7

It automatically installed the bookmarks I just created. It’s all working fine right now.

I still use Brave on my other machines and at work (we have 14 computers on windows 10 and they all work fine – Also use brave on my 3 tablets and my laptop - all running windows 11 (which I am not a fan of).

Suddenly, Brave won’t stay open if new tabs is not set to Blank Page. If it is set to dashboard, it won’t stay open more than 1 second.
If I disable the internet, then dashboard shows up (even if it was set to blank page).
I made all the changes suggested and not one thing worked.
Brave won’t stay open unless New Tab is set to BLANK.

Brave doesn’t seem to have any fix.
Brave was totally fine for years and then suddenly stopped working because of the daskboard setting for New Tab.

What’s the point anymore in using Brave?
What is the fix?
