Changing background color for new tab?

macOS 10.15.6
Brave 1.12.114 Chromium: 84.0.4147.135 (Official Build) (64-bit)

I want the default photos to be removed, so I switched off “Show Background Image”. The new-tab background was then replaced with the bright gradient purple-orange color, which bothers me more:

Can I make the default background color simply black or dark grey? I found an article that also described this issue, but the solution provided by NickWoolsey is no longer valid:


“Preferences -> General-> A new tab shows… Change that to “blank” and you will get a blank grey page :)”
