Can no longer start Brave, can in Icognito

This morning when I went to bed the browser was working just fine, after just 8 hours I power up my PC and start Brave only for it to not even launch. After some research I did the Private Window idea, upon clicking on Extensions it crashes Brave. There are a bunch of errors in the Error// folder in brave, uploaded them though I do not know how to use that information here. This is getting quite frustrating.

I can’t even do basic things in Brave, any link that I click on via the options tab like Tools and so on Brave crashes instantly. So I can’t even backup my links unless there is a way that I’m not seeing or don’t know about.

I’m having the same issue, however there is no error folder in my Brave directory.

C:\Users\PCname\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Crashpad\reports
That’s where mine are, minus the PCname so that will depend on you.

I have the same problem. It was working fine this morning, then when I tried to open it late morning, nothing. I can open the private window, but it crashes easily. It works on my phone, but not my PC.

same here, the app works fine but they must have done something with the update that launched today. Looks like in it they updated Chromium so who knows.

Win10 Pro, and I have no idea how to find out what version considering anything that I do in Brave crashes Brave.

I’m assuming so, again because I can’t find out or don’t know how to, it was working fine at 4:30 AM today. 8 hours later I boot up, and attempt to start Brave and it will not open, tried reinstalling, the installer never seemed to finish or I received no dialog box confirming proper re installation.

Not that I know of. But again I can’t check to see if any other extension updated or changed.

@Hawk1911 I’m going to ask you to try two different things.

First: Do a manual update/patch

For this, just go download Brave again from https://brave.com/download/ and install. As long as you don’t uninstall, you’ll lose nothing. This is just doing a manual update and can fix anything if there’s something broken within the browser itself (like a corrupt file)

Secondly: Launch in new profile

Assuming the above doesn’t work, the assumption is that it’s one of your extensions or something. If that’s the case, opening in a new profile will allow you to use the browser with no issues.

Can you go to your shortcut on the desktop, right click go to Properties, and then change the Target line?

On the Target line you’ll see something like "C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe" --profile-directory="Default"

Change the word Default to Test Profile So it would end up being something like:

"C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\brave.exe" --profile-directory="Test Profile"

Click Apply and then you can hit Ok. When you open that desktop shortcut, it should open your browser in a new profile

I’d like to know if that will work with no issues. And if it does, you should also be able to go to brave://crashes and be able to upload the crash reports directly (by clicking Send Now and then exiting the browser) if they didn’t already upload.

I attempted both of those, in fact reinstalling was the first thing that I did.

The second, i followed one of your posts for a similar issue, changing it from default to test account. Again Brave failed to even start.

I did send half of my crashes to where ever they go but i have no idea if they were successful. I closed the Brave window after but no sign that it worked.

@Hawk1911 interesting. Guess next thing I’d ask, would Brave Beta or Brave Nightly work for you? At least want to see if it’s a version specific issue if nothing else.

Unfortunately this happened 2 hours before i had to leave so I won’t know until I get home. No idea if anything will work considering how broken it appears to be.

Well, Hawk. There is another open issue on this at Brave Browser no longer launches

So between everything, able to pull info and know how things are working for others. At this point, it seems the feedback is that Beta and Nightly work. Now it’s just running through ideas on what might be causing issues.

Appreciate what you’ve been able to answer.

Was that info dump from one of the error logs useful?

Side note, how do I export my favorites so that they can work in any other browser?

I use Win10. As for getting any info from Brave, it doesn’t launch at all, only the private window. If I click on most anything in the menu, it immediately closes. I can’t find the version anywhere in the private window. However I was able to get the crash reports for today. I don’t have automatic reporting enabled. And it also says “Crash reporting is not available in Brave.”

I have no extensions that I know of.

I also tried reinstalling. I have the same results as Hawk1911. It appears of be installing, then nothing. And it doesn’t launch.

These are the crash reports for today (7-24-24) only. I did hit send, but don’t know if they actually went through.
