Can no longer start Brave, can in Icognito

I see there are at least two topics on this problem. I did install the beta which ran OK, then uninstalled it. I don’t wish to try Nightly.

Tried running as administrator. Nothing. Tried changing the lines in Profile as suggested. Nothing.

Can any/everyone here share with me the specific/exact Windows version they’re using at this time?

Windows 10 professional.

I am having the same issue. Brave will only run with the incognito flag with the nightly. The previous version will not run at all. Beta works. Nightly crashes as soon as I try to get into settings.

Mind checking the instructions/comment via Brave Browser no longer launches - #25 by kamil and see if that resolves the issue?

Basically launching Brave using --disable-extensions to see if that stops the browser from crashing. If that helps, then it’s an extension causing it.

C:\Program Files\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application
λ brave.exe --disable-extensions

There’s some more context within the other thread that I mentioned above.

Having the crash report should help a lot - it should be like a smoking gun

If you’re able to get into Brave and you clicked Send already, please try exiting Brave and relaunching. Then visit brave://crashes again and see if the Uploaded Crash Report ID: field is showing. That is going to be the one that can help us

I’m looking through the crash reports and not seeing any big ones. But I suspect many people having the crash didn’t send it yet.

No idea what to tell you, I did notice that the few that I sent in are now requesting nore info but I don’t have a github account so not help there. Sent in the remaining errors from yesterday and today, hope they help get some answers.

(I have far too many to really list honestly with the amount of times that I’ve attempted to fix Brave on my end, having to copy and paste these from a 3rd browser which is quite annoying.)

Clearly something in the update is causing this error.

No worries on the GitHub thing. But if you see the fields on the brave://crashes screen and can share those values - that would be helpful. Specifically the Uploaded Crash Report ID

BTW - did you get a chance to try launching Brave with the --disable-extensions command line flag? You can always edit the shortcut for Brave and add that to the Target field if you’re not sure about command line

Whoops - seems you edited to have the IDs. Thank you! :slightly_smiling_face:

Already tried that, no change, seems pretty consistent based on that other thread, not many users say that disabling works.

OK great- I found the error and see the other reports now. I shared this with the team

Something you can try which also helps diagnose - you can rename the profile directory temporarily to see if a fresh profile helps. This is what @Saoiray was trying to recommend (with the command line param) but I believe it’s actually --user-data-dir= and not profile. If you had tried that step, you may have launched into the same profile.

An easier way (without CLI) would be opening %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\ and then make sure Brave is closed. Rename the Brave-Browser folder as something like Brave-Browser2 and launch Brave.

That will have a fresh profile - I’m curious if the error happens there too. If not, that helps us narrow it down.

If you do this debugging step, you can exit Brave, and then go back to %LOCALAPPDATA%\BraveSoftware\ and rename Brave-Browser2 back to the correct name (you can delete or rename the empty profile).

@clifton Bingo - renamed the Brave-Browser folder (to Brave-Browser.old) and fired up latest version - works fine (obviously a new fresh profile etc).
The reversed the change - restoring the old folder - and we’re back to crashing.

OK this is great info @squirrell! Thank you! Let me know if this works for you too @Hawk1911

That means something about the profile is causing a problem. We just need to narrow down what.

  • We’ve already mentioned about extensions; from some reports, it seems --disable-extensions does not help.
  • People report private window is working. When launched via command line, etc. This is helpful to know too.

The error reported is dealing with SKIA - which is a graphics library used by Chromium. There are things which can cause different code branches with rendering

  • Using vertical tabs. Although, this is unlikely because Private window respects this setting.
  • Hiding options like Wallet, VPN, Rewards, etc will change rendering
  • There are possibly brave://flags entries that might be toggled. Those could be causing a problem

Will try to toggle profile options and see if I can get into this state

Just some feedback re these things you’ve mentioned. I’ve come from the other thread, have reported much of this there.

  • –disable-extensions has no effect
  • private window is working
  • vertical tabs - didn’t use them in my non-working profile
  • I would have hidden some or all of wallet / VPN / Rewards
  • Have not changed anything to my knowledge in brave://flags
Hope this helps, glad we getting somewhere!

Vertical tabs? I’m guessing im just using horizontal tabs then if i understand it correctly, not sure though.

okay renaming the folder did allow me to launch it via a new profile apparently.

I’m trying to enable things one by one to try and recreate a problem, no luck so far.

@Hawk1911 you would definitely know if you enabled vertical tabs  Tabs show on the side instead of the top.

One thing not mentioned yet - themes. Is there a specific theme you all were using? That definitely affects rendering and isn’t applied in private tabs.

Themes… I had a gray theme in the beginning but I think I changed it out with a default dark or gray scheme because it was buggy. Pretty sure at least.

Hi. I have the same issue. Yesterday everything was working fine and today Brave fails to launch. I didn’t download any new extensions etc.

I don’t know if this is of any help, but while I’m waiting on smarter people here to resolve this issue, I’ve temporarily tried other browsers. While importing the settings to another chromium based browser, Vivaldi, it crashed too. Then I’ve tried Firefox and it successfully imported from Brave.
