Brave sync on iOS is completely broken and has been for many months! - plus other bugs with sync on iOS too. (iOS) If you have iOS please read!

The beta release of Brave on iOS is now available with:

Added sync internals page to the sync settings screen. This should help with debugging sync problems people have been reporting recently

Firefox, Vivaldi, Safari are the three Ive returned to using until Brave gets fixed. Primarily Firefox.

Vivaldi is a nice browser, also designed with privacy in mind, but it too has quirks. I prefer Brave and I really do hope that sync gets fixed. Vivaldi doesn’t run on iOS (no webkit port).

Opera is nice too, but I find myself launching Vivaldi more frequently than Opera these days. Opera is pretty much useless for bookmarks on ios.

I have successful and seamless bookmark sync across apple products with Firefox and Safari. Firefox and Vivaldi sync with windows and nix. Vivaldi is chromium based, with no webkit version.

I exported my current brave bookmarks and consolidated them, then imported into a clean Firefox install on an apple computer, with a new firefox and pocket account. Then synced to most of my other devices. I am an apple user for the most part. However, I do run a couple android and linux devices, plus bsd and windows (all of which are much less important to me).

It’s not ideal. If Brave is fixed I will return to it. I still use Brave, but not regularly because no sync. If they need testers for this fix I will reconfigure Brave sync on my apple devices (and possibly windows and nix too).

I export my bookmarks to a couple different file shares about twice a year, and clean up my bookmarks. Bookmarks that I use on a daily to monthly basis I keep, e.g., reference material, frequently visited shops, bill payment, etc. Bookmarks from general browsing and shopping I delete. I can always find an obscure previously saved url in my exports if necessary.

For me, personally, Bookmark Sync is an important feature for a web browser.

The last time I tried Brave sync (which was months ago) messed up my bookmarks so badly that I lost trust in the sync system you guys developed. Sorry, but the sync feature turned my bookmarks into a mess, which was a painful process for me. Maybe I will check out Brave again in 2023? Still, I would like to see when this bug gets fixed. At first, I thought the sync issue was caused by weak data connection of the dormitory. It’s nice seeing that problem being taken care of. Can’t wait to see you get iOS version back into shape :facepunch:

the first sync version a few years ago deleted ALL my bookmarks

Believe it or not, I have not been disconnected from sync ever since my operating system updated on my iPhone to 15.3. I don’t think there was anything intentional about it but it is interesting to see that everything’s working just fine.

I mean this done a week now and everything still working properly. So I don’t know what changed but I guess if any of you are still saying that you’re having issues, have you tried updating the operating system as well as the version of Brave that you’re using? Also are you on iPhone or what are you using?

I had the same, after os update it started working like a charm, but after around 3 weeks it lost sync and (not)worked as usual so finally switched to safari again. Sad, I really like brave but without sync it’s useless for me.

Sampson,

Your

ā€œDesktop to iOS worked very reliablyā€

has been what I gather, in some replies (of other reports) – where the sync issue has been raised.

One person mentioned establishing a Sync Code at the Desktop, instead of doing that at the mobile device – solved the problem (or at least seemed to):

I’m having the exact same issues. Tested countless times.
I don’t want to switch to another browser but bookmark sync is very important to me.
I’m also curious about when my mobile devices will be able to see the open tabs on my computers.

Still happening for anyone dropping by the thread

Haven’t head from the devs recently but they couldn’t find the cause last time I spoke to them.

I am still here checking in and will update when I hear more.

Honestly I am disappointed they aren’t taking this more seriously.

It appears like they have a lot of other bigger issues to worry about right now, such as why there’s so many issues getting payments out to Gemini and Uphold. But what is confusing is like where I was causing I have an issues with you guys on getting my sync chain dropped. Ever since I’ve updated to 15. Three on my iPhone it no longer has dropped. However, it still is as I said to where things like search history is a one-way street where my computer and see what I’ve access on my iPhone but not the other way around. And it should show both ways. I also do not get why I can’t have the password capabilities with it but it is what it is.

And if they are testing with their own devices and not experiencing issues that you are, the night would leave a person stumped. Why is it that only one device or a handful of devices are having issues while others on the same operating system and all are staying connected?

still happening to me this is so annoying

Same; everything @ukheather describes is still happening here, as well. Which makes sense as they haven’t implemented a fix and may not have identified the issue yet. I have gone as long as a week without issue, more than once, but eventually my iOS devices will simply stop syncing with the chain.

Might help:

jeffdottem,

It may be, that a device must be set up as a hub, creating and dispensing the Sync Code for all others.

The hub should be a device that can produce screenshots of an entire

brave://sync-internals

report output.

I’ve started sync chains from every device I own, including my pre-M1 iMac. They all fail. After a day, or maybe a week, they all fail.

Thanks for letting me know.

After version 1.35.1 sync seems to be holding longer…

It still fails though.

As I said I haven’t had any confirmation they are even working on it yet as they couldn’t figure it out.

They told me they will let me know when they have more info meaning this isn’t being worked on yet as they don’t know the cause.

They can replicate it on some devices, but not all.

This is still unfixed so if you download the update, you won’t get a fix.

Very true, although it’s still holding for me

@UltraViolet Yeah, held for my 18 days or w/e when I updated. I did just intentionally disconnect all my devices last night as part of a troubleshooting process with someone else, just testing things on my end.

The Sync menu is showing like it’s all connected but if I go into History, it’s no longer having communication between devices. But Bookmarks still is synced. And because they don’t have Password thing doesn’t exist for iOS, obviously that isn’t a thing.

I’d just like to know why @sampson vanished with no updated. Brendan Eich was saying a bit ago he and his family was sick, but he also said was back in the office and just tagging him should be a good reminder and he’d get back to us. shrug

Unless they just are saying only having someone talking to ukheather and not wanting to update themselves here anymore.
