Brave Browser crashes on launching application

Description of the issue:
Brave browser crashes immediately upon opening the application. I can’t access any features of the browser, it opens and glazes over.

How can this issue be reproduced?
The issue happens everytime I try to open the browser.
I have uninstalled Brave, restarted my PC and downloaded the latest version of the browser, and the issue still happens.

I’m not certain what version of brave was installed before but I installed the latest version from the website as of 06 April 2023.

Additional Information:

I’m using Windows 10 version 21H2
Before this I’ve never had an issue with brave it’s working fine on my other PC.

@Mylo Well, since you’re saying closes immediately, I’m going to guess you wouldn’t be able to get to brave://crashes to make sure report is submitted and to provide the Crash Report ID, right?

Also want to ask:

  • If you try to open in Private Window instead of normal, is it able to open without crashing?

  • Are you using any extensions?

  • If you’re using anything like a firewall, antivirus, or internet security program, could you disable them and see about opening Brave? (on occasion, can see issues arise from them for odd reasons)

this started happening to me as well! upon installing the update “automatically” the browser suddenly stopped responding, i thought about merely relaunching it, and suddenly all my tabs are frozen and the browser froze altogether.
i closed the browser, restarted the computer “windows 10”, uninstalled it, reinstalled it,
Brave is up to date
Version 1.50.114 Chromium: 112.0.5615.49 (Official Build) (64-bit) the browser is LITERALLY frozen! with all my tabs still opened, can’t even click on anything!
i’m using Windows 10 22H2
before … Brave has been my GO TO browser for everything since the last 14 years without exaggeration! this never happened before!
i left Chrome alone for this Browser! … can you do something about this please?

opening private windows is not available - message from Brave Browser icon.
all the extensions i use are also being used in Fire Fox, and they aren’t doing anything unusual, UblockOrigin, HTTPS everywhere, Privacy badger, FastForward, XDM Xtreme download manager extension, Enhancer for YouTube, Return Youtube Dislike, Sponsor Block, Read Aloud: a text to speech voice reader, some other similar ones as well.
Brave worked with these extensions until 1 hour ago when i applied the update!

@JackMarten Often extensions cause interference. So it would be ideal to test it without them and see. You’re also using quite a few. Of the ones you listed, I know people have identified Return YouTube Dislike as one that caused issues. I can’t be certain, but I’m wanting to say Privacy Badger was identified as an issue in the past as well.

Firefox and Brave are two difference browsers. Differences in code make a really big impact.

That’s an odd one I’ve never seen before. Guess let’s try the second option. Can you create a new browser profile (making sure you don’t add your extensions to it) and see if it works fine?

Or if prefer, try disabling all your extensions and see if you notice a difference.

Any updates can make a big difference. Just like iOS 16.4 update caused interference with how Shields usually works on sites. So now Block Cross-Site Trackers is more strict than usual and blocking content it usually allows. This isn’t Brave’s fault. Any time a program or extension updates, you risk potential issues.

okay, let me try.
i’ll launch Brave, disable “YT dislike button return, and privacy badger”
then i’ll close the window, and then relaunch it, and see what happens.
also … yes i do rely on extensions a lot!
okay! disabled the dislike button and removed private badger altogether… it still froze!
while freezing, opening a new window is not an available option and private is just the same, not available option.
what do you want me to try next? disable all extensions?
okay! disabled 19 extensions! … yes i counted them! 19!
“mind you, Brave’s previous versions for the last 2 YEARS worked just fine, and with speed while having 20 ~ 21 extensions working with it!” and only the newest update made it freeze!
2 YEARS WITH 20 EXTENSIONS ACTIVE IT WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!! AND NOW IT FREEZES
confusing!
and just as i expected… brave … froze again!

@JackMarten Well, disabling was one way. Biggest thing to check would have been new profile. Sorry if I’m upsetting you, but just always have to stop and look over things one step at a time. Unfortunately, we see extensions break things all the time. Such as:

I do get things are frustrating. And on yours, it’s not when visiting any particular type of site or anything, right? It’s just when you’re opening?

Does it stay open long enough that you can go to brave://crashes, make sure report is submitted, and grab a Crash Report ID to share?

you are trying to help, so i’m open for suggestions, as for anti-virus things…
i quit them all! i only use windows defender, no McAfee, no Malwarebytes, i didn’t even know they has extensions!
most my extensions are “adfly block, captcha bypass, YT sponsorblock, fastforward, ublockorigin, https everywhere, YT enhancer, google translator extension, read a loud… and whatnot” so nothing out of the ordinary.
here is LITERALLY WHAT HAPPENS:
i click on brave broswer icon to launch the browser, and it instantly freezes and goes
“not responding” for 10 minutes, then all of the sudden it come back!
every time it freezes “not responding” stays for 10 minutes.
i don’t even open anything!
i ALREADY visited brave://crashes, let me check.

Just still waiting for you to try to create a new browser profile and advise if it does the same thing. I know assumption is it will, but it just helps to eliminate possible issues.

As to list of Crash Report ID, those should help. I know it’s currently Saturday night. Support gets back on Monday. So might be a day or two before they can get in and try to catch up on things that happened over the weekend. Just saying that to advise might be 2-3 days before official help comes around. Until then, it’s just hoping to go through little things. I can make next possible suggestion after you do Create a new profile from the hamburger menu Untitled - Paint 4_1_2023 23_47_42

Appreciate you taking the time to test a few things. Wish it could be easier to identify problems and resolve.

new profile worked just fine! … i’m surprised!
obviously new profile is literally the same as starting with a formatted account.
one could work with it temporary until support does something about the problems.
see you within 2 days. or 3.

@JackMarten if new profile, usually means it’s only extensions or was bad cookie, overall. Just so you know, sometimes disabling extensions isn’t enough and instead they have to be completely removed. That said, I’ll tag @Mattches here in case he can check and give any more insight based on your crash reports and all.

@Saoiray Thanks for the help, it’s really appreciated.

Brave works fine when creating a new profile. I’ve disabled my extensions but no luck. I’ll remove all installed extensions and see if that resolves the issue entirely.

as for myself, i’ll try to remove my extensions one by one, until i figure out where the problem is coming from.

Can anyone experiencing the crashes tell me whether or not they have any PWAs installed through Brave?

what’s PWAs?? any examples??
wait … so PWAs are possible addition programs to allow you to use phone - like apps and whatnot on the desktop? is that it??
because i don’t use anything like that with Brave.

For example, on desktop a PWA is a website installed onto your PC directly. It typically takes the form of a shortcut and will simply launch the site in its own personal browser window when opened. You can see the option to install Brave Community right now:
