Unauthorized transaction triggered by Brave Browser

Briefly describe your issue:
I had a 1 BAT transaction removing my Uphold funds and sending it to BRAVE directly, I did not initiate this nor did I approve it

Uphold replied with “We’re sorry to hear about this, upon reviewing the mentioned transaction(s) it seems it/they might be related to tips or auto contributions as they were triggered by Brave Browser. I advise you to check your Rewards settings and scroll down, there is an option where you see the status. If in any case it is “on” then that would be the reason why this transaction was executed automatically. If the feature is off please contact the Brave support team directly as they should be able to better assist you with this case.” Therefore I am contacting you

This image even shows no transactions, though I have the receipt

If yes, then any chance of retrieving them back is by Raising a ticket at

It’s Friday in the US now, most probably you will have to wait for a bit until next week. Team generally works only weekdays.

It looks when I loaded brave on my mobile (android) that setting was toggled on (just changed devices and must have missed that setting)

Does that mean it would auto contribute 1 BAT to Brave every month it is left on without asking me to agree to this? That is insane

Also, because it was on is there a chance of getting it reversed as I did never agree to it and see nowhere that it would happen on the rewards page (and I see no Tips configured as per the screenshot which matches on mobile and desktop)

Yes. But that’s the original reason for why they created brave rewards in the first place. They want users to tip creators and not just keep it to ourselves. It’s because when we use Brave, block ads, the Creators lose their revenue which woulda come from the ads if we saw them. Therefore to reimburse them in some sorts they have the Brave rewards system.

Well you could give a try by Raising a ticket at

No guarantee if they’ll reverse it back but better do it than sorry!
Also do note, it’s Friday in the US now, so you might not get a reply for the next few days. The team generally works only weekdays. All communication after Raising a ticket will be from emails. So do make sure they don’t end up in spam/junk.

I get it, and I have no problem tipping creators I follow, but I want to have a say in when and if the tip is awarded, not having it happen without any notice or warning to someone I never agreed to make a payment to, or even a notice saying “if this is active then X will occur regardless of any other actions”

Basically, rewards isn’t a mandatory part to be done to use Brave. You agreed to, so any default settings need to be checked by you.

Again, I get that, but any tips I make should be approved by me, not a hidden setting that doesn’t even tell you it will pull funds without approval (nothing says that any tips will be made to anyone by having it turned on, it appears to be a setting to automatically allow tips for when I designate a recipient, not a hidden recipient will be given funds without my knowledge) That is sketchy

Auto contribute is known to be glitched and to switch itself back on without user prompt/information.
This glitch has been known for years and devs have done little to nothing to address it.
