Tor window security

I have heard a lot of stories about people telling that they just opened the tor browser and were hacked in seconds without even opening URL. I wanted to ask if tor implementation of Brave is secure or this can also happen here?

Hi @ArmaanBarak,

OK, so this is a pretty complicated question but the short answer is that there is no perfect implementation of Tor that will give you 100% security over the web. There are many different ways to analyze data moving around the network that help people trying to track you. In fact there are known Zero-Day vulnerabilities for Tor.

I don’t really know the full answer to your question because opening a Tor browser without typing anything into the URL might be a thing, since you have to connect to the Tor network to start. Also, i don’t know exactly what you mean when you just say your friends were hacked, it could be for a number of different reasons.

Here is a link with information on techniques used to hack Tor Networks

All that being said, the Tor options using Brave does offer better security and anyone trying to hack your internet traffic might not easily be able to do so. Although, in the Brave help center they give you some information about the Brave Private Window with Tor.

At the bottom is specifically states:

If your personal safety depends on remaining anonymous, we highly recommend using Tor Browser instead of Brave Tor windows.

Here is the link if you would like to read it.

Finally i should say that if you were to set up the Tor Browser it would take some configuring that I don’t know about but doesn’t seem very simple to do and i would assume if its not set up properly then there could be some security issues.

Hope this helps

My friends weren’t hacked by the way but the information you gave is really helpful and clears my doubts. Thank for the help @wetkoala. :upside_down_face:

Hello, I personally recommend installing the Browser (You can find it on this site) created by The Tor Project ( organization in charge of tor). If you configure the browser correctly and you are careful with the data you share, and you use certain tips (such as ALWAYS USE HTTPS) your online privacy will improve significantly.

Goodluck!
