@zaphmann This happens because Brave (Release), Brave Beta, and Brave Nightly are separate browsers. Simply installing one won’t automatically transfer your bookmarks or passwords. Did you try to import your data over, or were you expecting it to happen automatically?
For Bookmarks, you go to Bookmarks Manager and choose Import or Export:
For Passwords, you go to Password Manager → Settings → and then choose either Import or Export:
Or you could go the easier way and add them to the same sync chain. Then everything you would want to sync would be shared across them.
Thanks, very helpful - i understand now - but the sync chain concept is new to me - maybe I’ll read up on that first. It seems odd (to me) that they are different browsers - is the functionality different in any way? If not what is different? The programming language?
@zaphmann Brave has three versions: Nightly, Beta, and Release. Release is the regular version most people use, but here’s the difference between them:
Nightly is where new features get introduced first, often months before they hit Release. It’s more experimental and likely to have issues because it’s still early in development.
Beta is a testing ground for features that have passed the first round of Nightly testing. It’s usually a couple of versions ahead of Release but still might have some bugs.
Release is the version that everyone gets, ideally with all the major bugs worked out after feedback from Beta and Nightly.
For example, right now:
Nightly = Version 1.72.3, Chromium: 129.0.6668.42
Beta = Version 1.70.107, Chromium: 128.0.6613.120
Release = Version 1.69.168, Chromium: 128.0.6613.138
As you can see, each version may run on a slightly different Chromium engine.
There will be differences between these versions. For example, in Beta and Nightly, you can enable Split View from brave://flags, which isn’t available in Release yet. Similarly, new features like Playlist will hit Nightly before they make it to Release.
If you’re using Nightly or Beta, expect to see features a bit earlier, but also some more bugs.
Btw, Split View is like you can see below, where it’s split screen from within a single browser window.
Sync is just having your devices communicate with each other. So when you save a bookmark, it will also be available on the synced profile on any device. It also would share passwords, so when you add or change a password within the browser on one it duplicates on the other.

Ok - i get it all now - I’ve been on beta for more than a year so I may as well stick with that - I don’t know why I was prompted to switch to “release”. Yep and I now ‘get’ the synching - similar to what Apple does with it’s apps. THANK YOU for such great help.
