Long time Brave user experiencing Extreme Brave lag/slowness and pausing since update to 1.75.175 and even worse after todays update to 1.75.178. Never had this prior to 75.175. 1.75.175 gave some of the known/reported cursor issues but after updating to 1.75.178 today the Overall slowness/lag/pausing is actually worst. Although so far no cursor issues.
From the time it takes to simply open Brave (Much slower/longer than normal) to clicking on Tabs, Scrolling is the worst, and even when Typing there is lag and pausing every few seconds. All other Windows functions and other browser such as Firefox work without issue and normal (even when open at the same time as Brave).
Disabled Extensions, Have Rebooted, and checked and updated Windows 10 OS; no change.

@BrewAZ can you confirm that you donât have your PC set to be in âtablet modeâ? If by chance you do, can you try disabling it and see if this resolves the issue?
Thanks. Definitely not in Tablet mode. Went ahead, turned it on and Brave performed the exact same way. Switched it back off. Same. Scrolling up/down webpages is especially troublesome (constantly pausing then jumps). Again, I can use Windows and other web browsers (Edge and Firefox) and are perfectly smooth.
Yep, turned âUse graphics acceleration when availableâ off. Relaunch of Brave literally took 2mins, 50 secs to close and reopen! When itâs normally seconds. Same issueâŚ
Yeah not clear whatâs going on here. Can you please try downloading the Beta Build of the browser and test to see if the performance issues are present when using it as well?
Note that doing this will not overwrite or interfere with your current installation â it will install as a separate browser and youâre welcome to uninstall it once the test is done.
Thanks, very interesting. Installed Beta and appears to be working perfectly and back to Fast & Smooth. Not sure what that tells us/me though. Again, my non-beta Brave was perfect until update(s) 1.75.175 - 1.75.178. Hope we can fix that.
@BrewAZ,
Can you please launch Brave (your original/stable build) and then open the browser task manager and share a screenshot of what you see here? Might be helpful to click on Memory footprint so that it displays the processes from most to least intensive with respect to memory consumption.
If you donât know, you can right-click in the browser next to the address bar and select Task manager from the context menu to access the browser task manager:
Yes, I get that screenshot but wanted to tell you something I found when comparing Stable Vs Beta Settings. I found that my Stable build had âUse WireGuard protocol in Brave VPNâ Enabled for some reason? I doubt I ever enabled that as I sometime use my own VPN. Second, I had Memory Saver enabled, Beta did not. So I disabled it. And lastly, âTab Hover Modeâ was set to âCard With Previewâ. Set it to Card like Beta. After those changes, Stable seems to be working âbetterâ (scroll is much better). Iâll Relaunch and see how it goes and get that screenshot for you. Brb
Well, I relaunched Stable and maybe itâs not 100% (Slower?) but hugely better! Tabs/scroll/typing seems to be back to normal. So I went to Settings again, and re-Enabled âCard with Previewâ and âMemory Saverâ. Still working good!?! Relaunched Stable Brave again, working good but noticed in Setting, âUse WireGuard protocol in Brave VPNâ was back Enabled!? I certainly didnât set that again. Beta isnât doing this.
Anyway I cannot explain it but Iâm in much better shape again. Weird, maybe a glitch/bug in 175/178?
Oh here is the Task Manager Screenshot.
Update. After using Stable for a few more hours since my last post, I noticed that the scrolling lag/pausing began to come back, sometimes intermittently. Almost like some sort of a full buffer/cache? Weird. So this morning I again Toggling the above Settings (Memory Saver, Card w/ preview) and didnât really see improvement. So since I had re-enabled my Extension âTab Manager Plus for Chromeâ after yesterdayâs improvement, I decided to again Disable it. Instant improvement!? Crazy since turning off this Extension was the first thing I tried back on 1.75.175 with no improvement. Ideas?
My suggestion would be to not use extensions like that tbh
They often cause a lot of weird unforeseen issues in browsers. I suspect that the issue will be fully resolved for you moving forward.
While I tend to agreed, I have Only used this 1 extension with Brave for many many years without issue. And as I said, it was the first thing I did was Disable it when 1.75.175 update installed and immediately started experiencing these issues. That didnât fix the issue and assumed it was the new known Chromium (Cursor) bug and expected the .178 update would fix it; Unfortantyly not.
Maybe itâs some kind of combo Memory Saver/Tab Manager/Chromium buffer glitch⌠And Brave Beta seems fine (even with this extension enabled) although I donât have all the tabs open that I have in Stable build (is there a way to import/copy them so I can compare builds?).
Thanks
No/Yes, been both with and without extension enabled at times. To review, Yesterday I updated 1.75.175 to 1.75.178 and the didnât fix the sudden scrolling/typing Lag/Pausing (with extension Disabled). So after posting here, you had me install Beta which worked fine. I then compared Beta/Stable browser Settings for any differences. I found that my Stable had Brave VPN Enabled which shouldnât be so, disabled it; Toggled Card/Card with Preview off, and Memory Saver off. Suddenly Stable started working much faster and Lag/pausing almost stopped. After rebooting Brave and using it for a bit, without issue, I decided to try Enabling my Tab Manager Extension again, worked without noticeable issue! I thought great, itâs fixed, but Unfortantly after hours of use the scroll/cursor Lag/pausing slowly started to come back. So I tried simply toggling the Brave Settings Card/Memory Saver/found VPN on again but still was Lagging. So finally, I Disabled the extension again and instantly smooth. Stable 175/178 is still unusually Slow to relaunch compared to itâs normal with extension Disabled. And Beta is working fine with the same extension Enabled (just doesnât have the same Tab load as my Stable build).
No fanboynz I donât, as I said when issues began with update 1.75.175 & 178 âI found that my Stable build had âUse WireGuard protocol in Brave VPNâ Enabled for some reason? I doubt I ever enabled that as I sometime use my own VPN.â
Whatâs really strange is after Disabling it, and Relaunching Stable Brave it was back Enabled again! I Disabled it again and somehow now seems to be holding it, weird.
PS. installing Beta build had VPN Disabled correctly and works normally with Tab Manager extension.
Xfinity users have been having this problem (delays and jerky loading, especially with images) with both Brave and Safari. There is a workaround. Are you an Xfinity user?
