Cannot download extensions "Failed - Server problem"

I cannot install any extentions from the chrome web store onto brave. Thee download always fails and throws the error “Failed - Server problem”. And then Chrome Webstore gives the error download inturrupted. This happens with any extention I try to install, and the only thing keeping me from using Brave as a browser.

I get the issue just by simply going to https://chrome.google.com/ and adding any extension. I tried disabling brave shild on https://chrome.google.com/ and it still did not fix.

I searched the forums and this seems to be unresolved, so I figured I’d open a thread. I really want to use Brave but no extension support is a deal breaker for me.

Brave Ver 1.13.82 - Chromium: 85.4183.83 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Hi @mattdeezly, Welcome to Community!
I see this topic is 2 days old - are you still having issues?
What version of windows are you on?
Are you using a VPN? or any antivirus software?

Yup, still having the issue. And its for one extension I really need, https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/eno®-from-capital-one®/clmkdohmabikagpnhjmgacbclihgmdje?hl=en

OS is Windows 10 - OS Build 19041.450

Brave info too -
Version 1.13.82 Chromium: 85.0.4183.83 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Edit: No VPN or Firewall, and Avast - Though it still wont work when I disabled my antivirus.
Edit 2: I’ve tried on multiple PC’s too, no luck

Can you try resetting your hosts file?

  1. Go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc
  2. And you should see a file called hosts
  3. copy that to your desktop (for save keeping)
  4. open the hosts file within the etc folder (using notepad)
  5. at the bottom there should by a line (or 2) that say clients2.google.com
    5a. e.g. 27.0.01 clients2.google.com
    5b. e.g. ::1 clients2.google.com
  6. remove them
  7. save
  8. try to install the extension again

I’m having the exact same issue which started maybe 3 or 4 days ago.

When I open the hosts file there is nothing that references clients2.google.com or any google domain.

I have the same Brave build and version also.

I do not have any extra lines in my HOSTS file… hmm, any other ideas possibly? Thanks again for your help

Can you share a screenshot of the hosts file contents?

I’m current running Brave Version 1.14.84 Chromium: 85.0.4183.121 (Official Build) (64-bit) on PopOS 20.04 and I’m having the same issue some extensions download and some don’t server failed I already check my host file and nothing that contains Google is there

I am also having this issue.
Brave Version: Version 1.14.84 Chromium: 85.0.4183.121 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Operating System: Fedora 30 (Workstation Edition)
My /etc/hosts file is clean.

I had to do a fresh install. I am now running Fedora 32 (Workstation Edition) and it plugins will now install.

I’m also having the same problem, on Windows. Seems to fail for every extension, but the one I’m actually trying to install is “1Password X”.

What’s really strange is that I have two Brave profiles on this computer, one for my personal Google account and one for my work Google account. Extensions successfully download and install only in one of the two.

I was just able to install “1Password X Beta” (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/1password-x-beta-–-passwo/khgocmkkpikpnmmkgmdnfckapcdkgfaf?hl=en) but not “1Password X” (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/1password-x-–-password-ma/aeblfdkhhhdcdjpifhhbdiojplfjncoa?hl=en).

Note that “1Password X” installed successfully on my other Brave profile…

Its fixed now for some reason… Was there a Brave update?

But to be through and maybe to help future people, here’s the screen cap.

this issue is on and off and never really seems to be fixed. Some days It works then It wont at all… I have no idea if Brave is just fundamentally broken as far as plugins go or what.

Same problem here, running ElementaryOS (base on Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS).

It was working perfectly, but I just formated my PC, and installed Brave Versão 1.15.72 Chromium: 86.0.4240.75.

I cannot install last pass extension. Since it was not working, I installed Chrome and last pass was installed perfectly.
