Brave sets itself as default without user interaction

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

While using debian, I have noticed some pages do not work very well on my firefox.
As soon as brave browser was done installing, all of the generic browser shortcuts now refer to brave browser instead of mozilla firefox, which is supposed to be the system’s default.

After manually setting mozilla firefox as the default browser, brave still opens up when pressing a browser shortcut. It also persists even after purging it from the system.

  1. Install brave browser
  2. update
  3. open a URL on another program

The expected result is to see my default browser, firefox, open.
Instead brave will always open, regardless of my system settings.

Brave version: 1.56.11 chromium: 115.0.5790.102.

If this doesn’t work i’ll probably delete it and use chromium.

Additional Information:

That definitely shouldn’t be happening. Can you go to Settings --> Get Started and see if the Make default option is already selected?

My settings are as follows.
Along with the default for web browser on system settings.

I am not sure what’s going on

@dial,
According to your OS settings, Firefox is also not your default browser then? Does the behavior change when you change that default setting to Firefox?

Yes, indeed, by default the system leaves it as “Debian Sensible Browser” and that behaviour changed once brave was installed. Specifying it as specifically firefox solved the problem.

Thank you for your time.
