Brave keeps crashing and is getting worse

The browser keeps crashing, both on its own, and/or when the computer sleeps, etc. It started this without any updates to ether the system or browser.

I am able to restart and Restore the windows that were open, and at first it would stay running for several hours as long as I didn’t move any of the open windows to a different desktop in macOS Mission Control. Doing so would cash it to crash within just a few minutes. However it is getting worst and now seldom runs for more than a few minutes before crashing again.

Is there anything I can do?

macOS Catalina

Version 10.15.7 (19H2026)

I am using the latest version of brave that will run on macOS Catalina 10.15.7. — and I am unable to upgrade this system any further.

@kunkuman,
Can you please launch the browser and quickly go to brave://crashes and ensure that you click Send now on any crashes that appear (if there is no button, that means that the report has already been sent). Then, please share the crash report ID(s) with me here so I can have our developers take a look?

Thank you

Okay… I hit send now on the two most recent, and these were also listed:

@kunkuman,
Thank you for reporting. I’ve forwarded this information to the developers for review. Hope to have more information for you soon.

@kunkuman,
It looks like you’re running into the same issue as the users in this issue here:

Maybe… but that doesn’t tell me much, that I understand anyway. I have found many threads here on this forum with Brave crashing on macOS.

I don’t even see in Brave what version I’m using now. “About Brave” in the menu says this:

Nearly up to date! Relaunch Brave to finish updating.

To get future Brave updates, you’ll need macOS 11 or later. This computer is using macOS 10.15. Learn more
Version 1.67.119 Chromium: 126.0.6478.114 (Official Build) (x86_64)

I have restarted the computer every day since this problem started weeks ago. So not sure it would do anything different to hit the Relaunch button… if you think that will make a difference I will try it.

Obviously no one at Brave… gives a dam about any of this. I did what you asked… you did NOTHING! Even this VERY page, causes your browser to crash. So… bookmarks exported, and imported elsewhere. To a browser that actually RUNS!

Trying to open Settings in Brave preferences crashes the browser! Your browser won’t even run your OWN preferences page without an issue! Pure over-bloated uselessness. I have six browsers that run on this machine… BRAVE is the only one going down every FIVE minutes!

I have been running Brave for nearly 4 years now on all my mobile devices, iPhones, iPads, and three different MacBook Pros over 5 years. I have never had the browser crash. I am a heavy daily user, use moderate default privacy/security settings and Express VPN full time.
So, I have to ask, what are all these users who experience regular crashes doing?
It might be helpful if “crash” could be defined also are these occurrences more on Windows or macOS?

I have been using it for the last couple of years myself. I my case this just started a few weeks ago, with no obvious updates to ether, the browser or OS… and by crash, I mean the browser (app) simply Quits, all windows are closed, on all desktops when using Mission Control in macOS (more often when using Mission Control). I have sent in dozens of crash reports like those above.

I can restart the browser, Restore all of the windows that were open when the browser Quit, sometimes it Crashes agin during the restart, other times it runs for 15 minutes, or ever a couple of hours …but eventually crashes again.

At the moment I’m using Brave only to keep this page open, and even then, it still crashes. So basically, it is not usable.

I’ve been sending your “worthless” crash reports for months. You must have about 500 of them there somewhere. Yet have never seen a single reply from ANYONE at Brave. But… I’m going go ahead and keep this post open forever… even if all it does is keep other people from WAISTING their time with Brave.

I understand you’re not happy about the situation @kunkuman - but if you’re not able to upgrade your OS version, I’m not sure what we can do. What version of Brave are you using?

Something which can help - revisiting the crash reports, there might be specific websites which cause the crash. Basically, the crash is happening when doing a serverTrust check - loading SSL/TLS details from the site.

Knowing what specific website can cause the issue would be a big help. The problem appears (from our investigation so far) to be in macOS. If it’s possible to upgrade the OS, I would highly recommend it. Chromium (which we use in Brave) will no longer support Catalina starting with version 129. We’re due to ship this to release channel with Brave product version 1.70 in mid-September.

I’m sorry to hear about the issues you’re facing with Brave on macOS Catalina. Have you tried clearing your browser cache or disabling any extensions to see if that helps? Sometimes a fresh install of the browser can resolve persistent crashing issues. Hope you find a solution soon!

Is it possible that this could be caused by extensions?

When I went to my extensions there were additional ad Blocking extensions installed (and I couldn’t remember why I had installed them, since this is supposed to be built-in to Brave in the first place). So I deleted everything and the browser seemed to be doing better, at least during the hour or so I was testing it. But now of course Brave is no longer blocking ads… which is the only reason I started using Brave in the first place.

The latest version of Brave I’m “allowed" to use is version 1.57.64, and I’m sure that is probably what I have installed simply because I would have looked that up…

But… I can’t tell you for sure because every time I open Brave and and try to get the version number by going to the Brave > About Brave menu… the browser immediately crashes immediately!

I can open any of the other links in the same drop down (Preferences for instance), but “About Brave” immediately crashes the browser.

The latest version of the Brave browser that will run on macOS Catalina (Version 10.15.7) is Brave version 1.57.64. This version is the last supported for macOS 10.15, as subsequent updates (starting from version 1.58) require macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later to function properly.

If you’re currently using Brave on Catalina, it’s advisable to stick with version 1.57.64 to avoid compatibility issues, as newer versions will not be available for your operating system.

Sometimes it crashes when you first open it, as it is starting up, sometime it crashes while only the screen (monitor) is sleeping, or while the actual computer was asleep (say overnight), sometimes it seems to crash more, or the minute I open more than one window and move one of them to a different window using Mission Control in macOS, for a while it seemed to crash more often when I had multiple windows open, and was using using Mission Control, so stoped using Mission Control, but this did not stop the crashes all together, sometimes it stays open all day, sometimes it crashes five times in 30 minutes. I can have just one window open, for instance with this address, Brave keeps crashing and is getting worse, and it will crash.

And there are no specific sites, or domains that cause it to crash. It seems to be totally random.

@kunkuman I’m not sure if extensions could cause this - but you could try to disable the extensions temporarily to see what happens. From the crashes, it looks like the crash is triggered when you visit a website and it’s trying to validate the SSL/TLS details. For example, the code will get a certificate and then evaluate the cert chain to make sure the website (ex: example.com) is who they say they are.

This process seems to break for some Catalina users.

And there are no specific sites, or domains that cause it to crash. It seems to be totally random.

OK this is good to know

BTW - I wasn’t aware that you can’t update past 1.57.64. Chrome is only deprecating support for Catalina with Chromium 129 and we aren’t there yet with Brave. The current released version (1.68.141 - https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/releases/tag/v1.68.141) uses Chromium 127 and it should technically work.

I decided to try to reinstall Brave “one more time”. Honestly… I think I have about done ALL I can to try to continue using this browser!

The GitHub “releases page” is insane (and I have found this reflected on several posts here at Brave)… I went there looking for 1.57.64 and… first of all, the search feature does not work “at all”. It is useless to type in the specific version that you re looking for (at least when using Brave). I ended up scrolling through page, after page, after page, for 2 hours looking for v1.57.64. I finally found 1.57.64, 1.57.62, and 1.57.56. Supposedly this is in chronological order… but it is not.

What is the latest version that will run in macOS Catalina 10.15.7, using the Quad-Core Intel Core i5 processor?

When this all started (going back to the very top of this page) I tried reinstall the current version “at that time”, and it would not run.

If you think installing v1.68.141 above will work, I will try it before completely giving up on Brave… but I am really getting tired of this.

Otherwise, I will try v1.57.64 one more time. If that doesn’t work I’m done here.

I currently have Brave v1.57.64 (I think?), along with the latest versions of Safari, Chrome, Epic, Firefox, and Opera installed on this machine, and Brave is the only one not working as expected.

@kunkuman it could be you’re stuck on an older version. And you’re right - the GitHub page is insane! :joy:

Here’s a link real quick to the Google announcement RE: Catalina, and how Catalina will be EOL’ed with Chromium 129 (which lines up with our product version 1.70; mid-September).

I would try visiting https://brave.com/download/ and just download from there and install on top of what you have. After downloading, close Brave of course. But then mount the DMG downloaded, and then drag the .app on top of the existing Brave Browser.app in your applications folder.

That should 100% work. If you wanted to try the binary from the GitHub releases page, the one you’d want is this one if you’re on Intel or this one if you’re on an M1 or newer processor. If you don’t know, you can download the universal one here and it’ll figure it out for you
