Brave hardware acceleration on and off causes problems with video replay and streams

For about a week now i have trouble with video and streams (youtube and twitch) while using brave browser. First it started with video lagging so I made sure to update my graphics drivers (nvidia). That did not work so I searched the forums and found the follwing chain of problems:

  1. hardware acceleration is off → video is stuttering
  2. turn hardware acceleration on → video is no longer stuttering BUT if I try to play more then one video at a time both will stop. This includes any combination of youtube video and twitch stream so yt + yt and yt + tw and tw + tw. If there is more then one video running both will stop and buffer forever.
  3. turn hardware acceleration back on any video will stutter but now I can run more then one again.
  4. uninstall and reinstall brave: I did a complete reinstall really deleted everything and reinstalled it and then turned hardware acceleration on and everything worked no stuttering no buffering everything was fine until
  5. restarted PC: all problems are back again…

I have the current version v1.75.178 of brave all drivers are up to date and my windows(10) is also up to date.
This problem does not happen to any other browser I have tried (chrome, firefox, edge).
Everything else works and brave used to work fine for 4 years and this only happend 1 week ago. I really like the browser but I can’t reinstall it every day so I opned this topic. Considering the fact that every other browser works fine, it has to be a problem with brave. The problem is not my internet connection that is a 1gbit/s fiber that is connected to my pc via ethernet and is very stable.

Your “lagging” after recent BB update issue, sounds like, or may be similiar to:

@andi255555 sorry for the delay. Let me ask you a few things:

  1. There was another small update today. I doubt it’s going to change anything, but can you make sure you’re on 1.75.80 and confirm whether the issue is still ocurring if it’s gone away.

  2. Can you check if this also happens in Brave Beta and/or Brave Nightly?

  3. Have you reviewed your settings in NVIDIA control panel for Brave? Such as in screenshot below (though there’s more not in the screenshot)

  4. Also hoping you can advise if videos are in the background when doing this, if you have the windows side by side, or what? And are they separate windows or in the same window but different tabs?

Hi,
thank you for the reply.
After ready the liked article i don’t think my problem is exactly the same.
I don’t have any issues with the browser in general it does not load pages slower then before and is not any slower during startup.
My problem was specifically about videos and streams lagging, the rest of the browser works fine I would say.

Hi,

  1. My brwoser has the current version v1.75.180 I assume thats what you wanted to write as well. And no the problem is still there.
  2. I tried beta and nightly and the problem is somewhat solved there. With hardware acceleration on the problem of vidoes stopping has been solved. Without it’s still stuttering but that is already a huge improvement.
  3. control panel settings are all default no changes here.
  4. Ok so my setup is a 1440p 144hz monitor with gsync and a second monitor with 2160p at 60hz. With hardware acceleration on if i have one video on one monitor and the other on the second monitor both videos stop. But let’s say i switch to a different tab with no video on one monitor then the video on the second will play again.
