YouTube Video Full Screen Stuttering

Description of the issue:

When I switch to watching YouTube videos in full screen mode, the video gets consistently choppy. It’s especially bad when in 1080p 60fps mode. Lowering the resolution doesn’t resolve the problem. Even if the resolution is lowered to 360p 30fps, full screen video is still choppy. If I switch the YouTube screen mode to the default view, the issue goes away.

In contrast, playing YouTube through Microsoft Edge works flawlessly regardless of screen size mode or resolution. When I played the same video on full screen 1080p 60fps mode using Microsoft Edge, it played smooth with zero issues.

This issue started recently because I used to be able to play 1080p 60fps YouTube videos on Brave without a problem.

Below are some other things I have tried to resolve this problem with no improvement:

  • Clearing cache and cookies
  • Turning off hardware acceleration

Other Information:

  • Lenovo Ideapad S340-15IIL
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version 22H2 (x64)
  • Intel Iris Plus integrated GPU
  • No indication of a resource shortage in task manager; average 70% CPU and 15% GPU usuage

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no)

Yes, the issue started with shields up with the default settings.

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off?

Turning shields off doesn’t resolve the issue.

Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no):

No, I have shields up using the default settings.

Does the site work as expected when using Chrome?

I have Microsoft Edge, but not Chrome. When I played the same video on 1080p 60fps using Microsoft Edge, it played smooth with zero issues.

Brave version (check About Brave):

Version 1.75.175

Solution: I uninstalled Brave and reinstalled it (now have version 1.75.178). This worked! My YouTube 1080p 60fps video now plays smoothly without any stuttering. I was never able to figure out what caused the full screen stuttering.

While I was troubleshooting this problem, I did discover an issue with my Koodo 5G hotspot connection. I suspected that this was what was causing the video to stutter. But this was a separate issue that was causing the video stream to not buffer. The choppy video streaming was a Brave browser issue.

Sometimes, issues develop after an update of Brave Browser, or an update of some component(s) of Brave Browser.

And, BB users try this and that, in order to get relief and get things back to normal - the accustomed, before-the-update performance.

The BB users’ fixes vary:

  • toggle Graphics Acceleration
  • toggle other settings
  • clear stuff
  • one or more computing device thorough restarts

In general, and more often, the cause is “something” that seems to have “put a dent in” one or more storage files for settings; for example:

  • Local State
  • Preferences

In such cases, toggling some settings, followed by a restart, brings BB around for most . . . but not all BB users.

Your Solution turned out to be enough to shake out the dust:

  • an issue with network connection
  • installing the latest update

By the way, good report.
