YouTube not remembering settings - how to configure shields?

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
YouTube doesn’t remember my settings (I am logged in). The default setting is ‘On’ for video previews (auto-playing thumbnails as you scroll), but I really want it ‘Off’ and have toggled it off repeatedly. However, about every 2 days it toggles itself back on.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Log into YouTube
  2. Toggle “Video preview” setting to off
  3. Use as normal, wait

Expected result:
My setting would be preserved until I cleared cookies/site data

Brave Version( check About Brave):
iOS Version 1.75 (179)

Mobile Device details
iPhone 12 Pro

Additional Information:
As far as I remember, all my Brave settings are still default. I for sure haven’t made any site-specific changes so far.

I’m not a programmer by any means, and have only a very basic understanding of cookies/trackers/shields. Ideally, I’d like Brave to store a cookie (or whatever it takes) to remember my settings on this device. I don’t know if that requires turning off shields entirely for YouTube, but I’d prefer if it wasn’t able to track me away from YouTube itself.

@purplesquash it should be preserved until you clear cookies/site data. Something you’re doing is triggering this to occur. You state that this occurs every two days – is that the only way this occurs? That is, is there anything else you can do to trigger this to occur (other than something that would obviously trigger it – like deleting all your site data/cookies, etc) consistently?

For example, if you set it to auto-play the thumbnails and then fully close the browser then relaunch it, is the setting remembered? Or if you restart your device? What if you only close the YouTube tab?

@mattches I just went to test out your suggestions, and found that the setting had already reverted since this morning. But after turning it back off, I tried closing the tab, fully closing out the browser, and even a combination of closing the tab then the browser. I also just restarted my phone. None of these caused it to revert. I’m stumped!

Is there a particular setting you think could be causing it to clear the data automatically, if I did change something and forgot? I’ve looked through them, but I’m not 100% clear on what they all mean. I’m definitely not manually clearing any site data.

Not really, unless you have data set to be cleared on exit. But even then, you just tested fully closing the browser and it didn’t trigger the issue. Let me see if anyone else can reproduce this.

Hey adds Youtube in sites not to delete donations like that when the efacement is done all your donations youtube will remain keep ^^ I had the same feeling and since I configured this, it works of the fire of god xD

Alright! I’ll keep an eye out for if anyone has new ideas, but in the meantime it’s not the end of the world.
Thanks for your help!

@purplesquash still not able to reproduce on our end but will continue testing and let you know what we find out.

I’ve been having these same issues too since January, even on Version 1.76 (77) on iOS 18.4 (22E240) on an iPhone 11 (A2111)

I’ve noticed that the following settings get reset frequently back to default, even if toggled off:

  • Video previews (keeps resetting to "On)
  • Location (keeps defaulting back to “United States”)
  • Ambient Mode (keeps resetting to “On”)

The expected result is that these settings would be preserved until the user cleared cookies/site data.

This does frequently happen when opening YouTube in new tabs, but it’s been starting to happen even in the same tab (albeit not constantly) after refreshing or if the app is reloaded. Just like purplesquash said, this seems to be resetting every 1-2 days. For the record, I am logged in to my YouTube account.

I tried turning off Shields, and have mostly everything in Brave Shields and Privacy set to the default. However, this issue still persists even with all disabled. I don’t have anything to auto-clear on exit, nor do I have Auto-shred enabled. My filter lists are:

  • EasyList Cookie
  • Fanboy’s Annoyances + uBO Annoyances
  • Fanboy’s Social
  • Fanboy’s Anti-Newsletter
  • Fanboy’s Mobile Notifications
  • Bypass Paywall Clean Filters

The following settings are enabled on Brave Shields and Privacy:

  • Trackers & Ads Blocking (Standard)
  • Upgrade Connections to HTTPS (Standard)
  • Auto-Redirect AMP Pages (On)
  • Auto-Redirect Tracking URLs (On)
  • Block Scripts (Off)
  • Block Fingerprinting (Off)
  • Enable Global Privacy Control (On)
  • Block Cookie Consent Notices (On)
  • Store contact information for future broken site reports (Off)
  • Auto Shred (Never)

I even tried re-installing the application with default settings and I’m still experiencing the same issue. For the record, this does not happen with my iPad Pro (10.5") on the latest iPadOS version as well, only on iOS am I having this issue.
