Windows high contrast setting is being forced on Brave again

It’s basically the same thing that happened in this old thread from 2021.

Problem is the flag used to fix it, #forced-colors, seems to have vanished from my flags page. I’ve thoroughly checked for anyone else having this issue and found nothing, so I’m posting it myself.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): Turn on windows high contrast mode.

Expected result: Webpages should have their own color.

Reproduces how often: Constantly.

Operating System and Brave Version: v1.80.113, Chromium 138.0.7204.49

Hello @Kremscrad,

I have a colleague who has an issue and he MUST use High contrast theme for his work, and he has the SAME Problem with Brave since yesterday.

After update to v1.80.113

All websites are shown in high contrast colors, and its super difficult to work on websites.

Steps to re-produce:

Win 11 Settings - Apply any high contrast theme
Open Brave Browser: All websites adopt high contrast.

Please help. :blush::folded_hands:

PS: This settings here dont have any effect:
brave://flags/ vulkan
brave://flags/ Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents

Same here. It’s been broken for the past 3-4 days now. Running on Windows 10. I use a high contrast, white text on gray background theme. Every single website is solid gray now. There’s no color on anything that isn’t an image. No highlights, no shades, no borders, no colors, everything blends together in a sea of gray. It’s awful.

In Settings:Appearance, assigning colors as Windows/Light/Dark does nothing. They all look the same.

Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents in brave://flags/ does nothing.
Hardware acceleration On/Off does nothing.

Brave: 1.80.113 (Official Build) (64-bit) Chromium: 138.0.7204.49

Previously Google Chrome had been rendering properly these past few days. But today it updated and now it’s broken too.
Chrome Version 138.0.7204.50 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Edge was always broken. You’d think Microsoft of all people would have a functional profile for System/Light/Dark. Nope.

Firefox renders correctly. If this doesn’t get fixed, I might have to migrate back over. I need high contrast to have a proper dark theme on Windows. I hate how it ruins everything else.

Something to note in Brave vs Chrome is that all checkbox sliders are completely invisible in Brave when this happens. In Chrome they’re visible, rendered with the text color.

This really needs to be fixed.

Same here.

I MUST usse High Contrast Mode becasue of my eyes.

Brave 1.80.113 (Offizieller Build) (64-Bit) Chromium: 138.0.7204.49

Froced colors flag has disappeared.

Have anyone an idea how/where to report additaional to Google Side? :folded_hands::sparkling_heart:

I found a solution while searching for support on other browsers. It works for all Chromium based browsers. Unfortunately it seems it’s only temporary, but for now we can still use it.

Open brave://flags/

Locate Temporarily unexpire M137 flags and set to Enabled

Relaunch browser.

The Forced Colors option will be available again. Go back into flags, and change Forced Colors to Disabled

Relaunch browser. It should be fixed. For now. It may only be a matter of time before a future update removes the option entirely.

Forced Colors being removed in future versions will be a serious issue if there isn’t a replacement solution to the high contrast problem.

Found another solution:

Start brave with

--disable-blink-features=ForcedColors

Hello @Viewer,
Thanks a lot for add this suggestion, however it doesn’t work for me I get the message:

Unsupported command line flag

Hello @GrulT Thanks su much, THAT is working!:folded_hands::+1:

  1. Open brave://flags/Temporarily unexpire M137 flagsEnabled
  2. Restart Brave → Open brave://flags/Forced ColorsDisabled

Thanks so much again! :sparkling_heart:
