Yeah, agreed, brave needs a menu bar and the ability to remove the terrible UX that is the hamburger menu.
When I want a hamburger menu, I’ll tell you by enabling the “I want a shitty UI” option
(hint: never ever ever ever ever)

you clickes on “I want a shity UI” and later loks like Firefox
This along with no master password keep me on firefox… and I hate what firefox has become. I can do with the missing appearance customization for now, but those two are deal breakers. I guess I will check back in in another 6 months
Pretty sad that this thread has existed for years without the Brave devs so much as batting an eyelash. Not everyone has time to look up and memorize shortcuts for every application they use. In fact, the hamburger menu doesn’t even HAVE every menu option. For example, opening a file on the computer. The point of a full menu system is knowing what’s available to you. If it isn’t on display, how are users even supposed to know it exists? But it’s a known issue that Chromium is too complicated for third party developers to maintain a fork of properly.
I think this degeneracy is inherited from Chromium. A pity.
This makes Brave distinctly less useful for me. I keep at least one other browser going and when Brave can’t easily do it I switch.
This illustrates how using Chromium as base is a bad idea that may get worse. Consider that when picking the browsers you use.
Interesting not to see the developers comment here (that I noticed).
Also interested to see people who don’t feel the need chipping in with their comments.
Hello all,
my message is simple: please bring back standard windows menu bar and standard windows window frame.
I’m using the window title as a place, where I can grab the window and move it. I think this is intuitive usage of this place for years. I can’t do it if the frame is not a frame but tab control.
I’m from country whose citizens reads from left to right so having the main app menu on right side is really bad for me. Hamburger menu is good for mobile but I’m using brave on desktop. Every day, many hours a day, so I know what I want.
Maybe old window frame and old app menu doesn’t look cool for children, but I’m using browser for work not for fun.
Thanks
I agree with you completely. I have a lot of bookmarks that are in separate folders and having to go to a hamburger menu, then to bookmark manager, find the right folder, click on it, then be able to click on the bookmark I wanted is a real pain in the a**. I want that menu bar back so all I have to do is reach up, click on bookmarks, then click on the one I want because as you go down the list the folders open up on the side to show what’s in them. And that window frame back as well would be a great help!!
I find the energy devoted to this lengthy thread absolutely amazing as Brave doesn’t respond to 99.9% of feature requests. Complete waste of time. Users have to make do, or not, with what is. The choice is yours.
Right. 99% of users don’t care about an old-school menu bar. But the ones who do care really care. Brave has about 19 million daily active users, and this thread has about a dozen of them asking for a menu bar.
That said, I’m all for options. Menu bars have gone out of style for aesthetic reasons, not because they weren’t useful. People pining for the old menu bar might consider Vivaldi browser.
Brave is never going to do this. Vivaldi will let you use the native Windows title bar and show the File menu if you want to. That said, I use and recommend Brave for the privacy features. But Vivaldi is a lot more flexible.
i am so old school i dont know if i am adding a new post or just replying. Probalbly not part of Brave’s preferred user base as I opened this account just to request the option to have a menu bar. But yeah, i prefer the menu bar. no warning, i updated brave in mint and the menu bar is gone. no option for desktop users just the akward right side hamburger. i started using brave and do like the privacy but learned from this thread about Vivaldi’s repect for end user options. (compared to apple, MS, google, Brave, etc.) i hope brave brings back the menu option because I like the news feature. Until then i will use Vivaldi at least until the “no menu bar virus” strikes them as well.
+1
On Horizontal Main Menu.
Very flexible when working on remote.
+1 in 2023 it is still idiotic that every other windowed app on an OS uses a menubar but Brave doesn’t. It’s not a fullscreen app. A lot of people don’t like the idea of clearing everything but the page.
Also: this is a few hours work, why not give the people what they want for that? Make it optional and everybody is happy.
I don’t think it’s a dozen users. The amount of users that were able to find this post and take the time to create an account and ask for a feature usually should be multiplied by some factor.
Also, I don’t get why Brave would never do this. It’s a great browser has almost everything in it. The only major problem with it is that it goes along with some that have holistic ideas about how people should want to use a certain product.
I thinks there are two kinds of people:
Why not create options two support both of them?
Try ALT + F. I do not miss a Menu Bar, but I agree it should be optional, you know, a switch located on settings > appareance.
For me a major problem of killing the menu bar is that Brave is now missing important functionality!
I’ve used to have several windows open and named them.
I could click on the menu “Windows” and had a list of my named open windows.
With only 2 clicks I could select another window (with all its tabs) for another topic I’m working on.
Now with the hamburger menu, I cannot even get a list of open windows any more. This functionality is completely gone!!
I was also missing the functionality to name am open window, but I found it down in the menu tree at Hamburger → More Tools → Name Window …
I was glad to rediscover this functionality, which was in the menu “Window” before, but a list of windows is definitely missing.
Please bring the main menu back or at least keep ALL the functionality it was providing before.
I personally think, that there’s no use to change a well running system and hide important things and strip things down, just because it may look nicer.
Yep!
It is the new trend of ‘hiding’ or ‘un-code’ things for users these days.
i.e. classic menu bar
Just installed Brave and I will not use it as main browser, as I am an avid user of the menu bar too. It is the new century or MAKING the user lose control of their life and when it is imposed is utterly ridiculously childish!
The lack of the file menu has prevented me from fully migrating too.
The “No menu bar” thing is the only blockade keeping me from using Brave full-time.
Fabulousest-Brave-Developers-Ever: Pretty please with a luscious and juicy red ripe cherry on top - create an option to enable the wonderful time-saving top file menu bar.
same this is just the kind of yagni-ism that removes great features because some ux guess doesn’t like it. Same in Firefox Tab Groups manager was awesome and massive extension but the powers that be decided it wasn’t needed and then implemented their nasty new tab groups ui that reimplemented some of it but not well.
