There is now message when it closes. It just exit like I clicked the X. I need to tell you that; I copied and pasted the default user data from another (chrome based) browser to brave’s default user data. I’m mostly happy with the result. I got to move all my important data this way. I really don’t want to completely reset it. I just want to deal with the problem directly. Which probably means fixing/replacing the specific broken user data file(s)/folder(s). I’m just not sure if this is the problem. And if it is I don’t know which file(s)/folder(s) are broken.
This happens with me too. It only just recently started happening; probably within the past couple of updates or so.
This is also happening for me. It is frustrating as all browser windows crash when I open the private window.
Hello, fellow users. Could you all type brave://version into your address bars, hit return/enter, and let us know what version of the browser you’re using? Also, what operating system and version of it you’re using? You probably know how to get your OS information, but just in case, in Windows do Start->Windows Administrative Tools->System Information, in macOS Apple menu->About This Mac, Linux varies, but in Mint 19 Cinnamon GUI Menu->Preferences->System Info.
I’ll experiment a bit with my installs to see if any of them exhibit the same behavior and report back.
None of my Braves exhibited this behavior (see below); all had no trouble opening private windows and private windows with Tor, as well as closing them after visiting a site.
If you’re using the latest Windows 10, I’m thinking it might be the Windows feature update 1903 that broke your Brave, or if you updated Win10 a while ago, something in the latest Brave that doesn’t like Win10 1903. I’m about to update my Windows install to 1903 and will report back.
Hnk’s multitudinous Brave Install results:
Linux Mint 19 Cinnamon (3.8.9), kernel 4.15.0-54-generic:

- Updated to kernel 4.15.0-55-generic:
- this also updated Brave, Brave 0.66.101 Chromium: 75.0.3770.142 (Official Build) (64-bit) private window and private window with Tor work fine
Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version 10.0.17763 Build 17763 (will be updating to 1903 later today):

- Brave Version 0.67.112 Chromium: 76.0.3809.62 (Official Build) beta (64-bit) both work fine.
- Brave Version 0.68.104 Chromium: 75.0.3770.100 (Official Build) dev (64-bit)
both work fine.
@afraid @stevenmchoi,
Did the two of you also copy the User data
folder from a separate chromium based browser into Brave? If so, which browser (would be helpful for @ASPyr97 to answer this question as well)?
Is there a particular reason you copy/replaced the User data
folder, rather than using the built-in Import bookmarks and settings
feature?
Away from that laptop right now, will get the version info when back. Don’t recall copying the user data folder.
Now updated to Microsoft Windows 10 Home Version 1903/10.0.18362 Build 18362:
- Brave 0.66.101 Chromium: 75.0.3770.142 (Official Build) (64-bit) private window and private window with Tor work fine
- Brave Nightly, 0.70.3 Chromium: 76.0.3809.62 (Official Build) nightly (64-bit) both work fine.
So probably not Win10’s 1903 update causing the issue?
I’m running Windows 1903 Build 18363.239
Brave Version 0.66.101 Chromium: 75.0.3770.142 (Official Build) (64-bit
Also lastpass, ublock origin and privacy badger.
Because of the results below, unless only the OP copied Chrome profile folder into Brave, I’m thinking it’s something in the copied profile folder.
Have you tried creating a new person with the person manager to see if a fresh profile has the same behavior?
The person manager is accessed with the icon to the left of the hamburger menu in the upper right of the browser window.
Using same Windows and Brave:
Installed/logged into Lastpass extension, opened both types of private window no problem
Added UBlock Origin extension, same
Added PrivacyBadger, same
Creating a new user seems to have worked, thanks!
