Type of device (Desktop, iPhone/iPad, Android phone, etc.):
Mac Studio M2Pro running Sequoia 15.3.1
Brave version:
Newest, whatever that is because I had to UNINSTALL Brave so my computer would work.
Detailed description of the behavior:
For a couple days, the VPN sign in window has been popping up. The first day, I could click Cancel and it would go away and stay for quite some time.
The second day, it popped up almost continuously. It is interfering with most functions, and even “froze” my computer when I tried to play a game. I had to physically shut my computer down. Three times that happened, so I uninstalled Brave Browser.
Is there a way to totally shut off that VPN? The logo shows it is WireGuard, and after searching about WireGuard, I found that Brave apparently uses it as part of their VPN package. I don’t want it if I’m going to constantly be fighting it.
It does not pop up when I have Brave’s VPN button turned to on, but there are websites I visit that will not allow VPNs, unfortunately. And, why does it come of if I’m not on the Internet with Brave open???
@TanBrae to clarify, you have a Brave VPN subscription on your macOS device, which works when you enable the VPN from the toolbar, correct?
The issue is that there is a system dialog that appears, asking you to sign in – is that correct? If so, can you please share a screenshot of it with me here?
This is particularly strange considering that I believe we only use the WireGuard protocol for Windows installations, not on macOS.
Thank you!
Here is another tidbit, whether it helps, or not. I’ve been online most of the day, with no issues. When I logged into Facebook, I started getting the popup again. I closed FB, and things are back to normal. Hmmmm???
Also, is it possible that, because I’m running a different VPN, that it could be messing with Brave’s VPN? I don’t use Brave’s VPN any more because I can’t stop it from not allowing me to open a few websites I visit frequently. This other VPN allows me to open those sites.
@TanBrae do you get the same issue if you stop running the other VPN you have on your system? Also, which sites are you unable to view when using the Brave VPN?
It seems to be a bit random when I get the pop up. I got it today after I stopped the other VPN, which now is NOT allowing me to visit the main website I visit every day (I am the owner and admin of a message board). I had to go to my settings and stop the Mac firewall, refresh Brave, restart the firewall, then I could access the site. The site, as an aside, does NOT allow VPN connections, so that is why I quit Brave’s VPN - the other VPN I use allows me to “exempt” my message board for connection.
Facebook, as I stated earlier, is one that seems to mess with the VPN, which also started yesterday NOT allowing access with either VPN.
Perhaps it’s Mac’s firewall causing the issue??? Otherwise, why would I have to stop the firewall, refresh, then restart it? I have had to do this multiple times some days, for the same websites.
I don’t think that this issue is being caused by the other VPN, although it may be complicating things. We actually have a solution being worked on for this here:
I have the same set up on my MacBook Pro M1. I use Brave as my browser, but use Proton for the VPN. Firewall is on for both computers. I am not having an issue with the MacBook. No VPN pop-ups. No having to stop the firewall, then restarting it to make the browser work.
I also had an update for Sequoia yesterday, to 15.3.2, but I did not update the MacBook. So far this morning no VPN pop-ups. So, is it Apple junk happening, or is it really the VPN?
