Spell check dictionary download failed (german)

I tried to enable spell checking for additional languages but get the error “Spell check dictionary download failed”. Looking in the forum I find 9 hits, most of them are closed due to inactivity, therefore I open the thread again.

For me, the download error happens for German only. French and Italian, for example, work.

Linux/no firewall

Edit: download 3rd party de-DE-3-0.bdic as suggested here works

I’m having the same issue. I tried downloading that file and placing it in the path mentioned in the other post (manually created the directory “Dictionaries”) and it is not working for me.

same here. fedora, flatpak.
output: Spell check dictionary download failed.
Please check with your network administrator to make sure that the firewall is not blocking downloads from Brave servers

i’m at home, vpn or not doesn’t matter.

Version 1.76.82 Chromium: 134.0.6998.178 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Download the bdic or get it somewhere else (like from ms-edge)
I had the same issue on Windows 10. This is how it worked for me:

  1. On Edge, enable spell check in German. Get the file from C:\Users\Baxim\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Edge\User Data\de-DE-3-0.bdic
  2. And copy it to “C:\Users\Baxim\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\Application\Dictionaries\
  3. Restart Brave and enable German spell check
  4. I had to do twice for it to work and I tried to copy it into “User Data” as well and I had enabled Spanish first, so I knew where the bdic file has to go
