Search on Brave sometimes pops up a Private with Tor window

I’ve noticed lately that sometimes when typing in a search query in the URL box and hitting enter a second window will pop up that is a Private with TOR window. This does not happen all the time.

  1. Open a new browser tab
  2. In the URL box type “brave community” - a separate Private with TOR Brave window pops up in this case at https://search.brave4u7jddbv7cyviptqjc7jusxh72uik7zt6adtckl5f4nwy2v72qd.onion/
  3. Close the TOR window and erase the text in the URL of the original Brave window
  4. Type in “brave desktop” and hit enter. Now Brave does not open a TOR window but just performs the search.
  5. Tried the “brave desktop” search of #4 and now it’s popping up TOR windows. The behavior is erratic.

How do I get Brave to stop this? It’s become really annoying!

Try the following:

  1. Type brave://settings/extensions in the address bar.
  2. Disable Automatically redirect .onion sites if it is enabled.

That seems to have fixed it. I wonder how that got turned on. I don’t recall setting that.
