Brave opening links in private window

When I click on a link, some of them open in a new browser window and a Tor tab. For some reason onion is being added to the original url.

For example, this https://www.nytimes.com/ becomes this https://www.nytimes3xbfgragh.onion/

Any ideas how to stop this?

Version 1.19.86 Chromium: 88.0.4324.96 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Go to Settings > Extensions and uncheck Automatically redirect .onion sites.
