Password got completely erased after mac restart

Description of the issue: Just got on today and all of my passwords are gone, yep every single login is now gone. Most of my autofills too, MOST but a few minor things like a random username or or email might autofill, but no password. This is ridiculous. Though everything else seems to not have changed, bookmarks bar etc.

Actual Result: I’m not gonna screenshot my passwords section as ive had to re-add a few, but I can assure you hundreds are now gone.

Operating System and Brave Version: Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC
Brave: Version 0.68.142 Chromium: 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information: It would be fantastic to get all of those back. Also is there a way to export all information from brave to a txt file or something? Like list of bookmarked websites, passwords, autofills etc.

hummm… all my passwords disappeared yesterday. I assumed it was caused by a fumbling my keystrokes. The delete occurred very near a time when I attempted to remove site settings for a particular site. I figured I accidentally deleted all site settings and that was where my passwords disappeared.

Are you certain you did nothing to delete the passwords yourself? If you are, then I am wondering if this might be a wide spread problem, similar to the widespread problem of actors posing as journalists and big tech censoring with false allegations that there is no evidence of widespread irregularities in the 2020 election.

@carla_rogers @Santoshreddy459,
We actually are seeing an uptick in issues like this right now – we have an open thread to capture and diagnose data on this:

I’ve added both of your reports to the Github thread above for review. Can I ask if either of you have Brave Sync enabled at this time?

@Santoshreddy459,
You can export bookmarks (as .html) and passwords (as .csv) from Brave by going to:
Bookmarks: Settings --> Bookmarks --> more options (three dots) --> Export
Passwords: brave://settings/passwords --> More options --> Export

I have had Brave Sync running with my two devices on a sync chain without interruption for at least a month.

Just now, I discovered all my passwords deleted again. The disappearance occurred in the last five hours, because they were present at the time of my previous post.

I am switching to the main thread you linked to. Thank you for the info and initiative you have taken on this issue. That is what I call exceptionally awesome customer service. I am not worthy.

@carla_rogers,
You most certainly are worthy.
I would recommend exporting your passwords once you have them in again so that it doesn’t have to be done manually.

I’m also wondering if this is related to Sync at all. Did this behavior only start occurring after Sync was enabled?

Yes and no.

This problem is affecting only one of my two installations of Brave Browser Nightly (BBN).

Only BBN on Android phone is affected.

Android 11, Pixel 2 XL

BBN on macOS is saving passwords normally.

macOS 10.15.4 (Catalina)

To observe this

I had to remove the phone from the synch chain. When the phone was on a sync chain with the desktop, passwords were disappearing from both devices. I suspect the failed password saving on the phone was removing the passwords from the desktop via sync.

Now, basically, nothing is sync’d and only the phone is losing passwords.

IDEA: Consider disabling sync of passwords in Brave Browser. You might find that only Brave on Android or Brave on non-desktop devices is affected.

If the problem is occurring on all Androids, then all devices sync’d to Android are dropping their passwords. That would be a horrendous problem.

I have only Android 11. Are there any cases where passwords are saving correctly on Android 11? If yes, are any of the cases where passwords are being saved by Android 11 on Pixel 2 XL? If yes, maybe there is a permissions issue affecting only Android 11.

If you cannot find an Android saving passwords, and find all desktops not sync’d to phones are saving passwords, this is a widespread horrendous problem.

Desktops running macOS should be isolated from Android or sync’ing in general.

P.S. I don’t know if what access if any this discussion board has to Brave developers or product managers. If this is a widespread problem, this problem is extremely horrible, but, ironically, big problems like this can be used to big advantage, by responding in a manner befitting the problem. That mean maximum escalation, maximum communication that users will see, and al-hands-on-deck to get this solved. If Brave is already on top of this, great. If this is widespread problem, the response from Brave so far is pitiful. If the Brave team is not clear on the extent of this problem, and it is a widespread problem, it means there is huge hole in your operation. I am not saying this to be critical. I love Brave Browser because of its unique values. Turning this problem into a positive can be done. I hope the problem is not widespread but if all Androids are affected, how many androids do you think are sync’d to other devices?

Got to go, hope this helped.

@carla_rogers,
FWIW, I just created a Sync chain between my macOS and Android device and passwords were synced without issue. I do not believe this to be a widespread issue necessarily, but I’ve passed this report onto our Sync team regardless. Hope to have more information for you soon.

Android 11?

Still no issues with passwords disappearing?
