How do I get rid of this nag at the top of the browswer? " for quick access place your bookmarks here on the bookmarks bar?

Maybe hide your bookmarks bar? I mean, it’s only there because you have it visible and have chosen not to add any bookmarks. So either add a bookmark or hide the bar.
I definitely did not. I think it appeared when it updated. In any event I used my not so savvy skills to hide it. As I type I don’t even know what I did. I would have loved to share because I see many people have or had issues in the past with this .
Since you didn’t mention your OS, hard to give specific instructions as keybinds differ from like Mac to Windows, for example.
But on Windows you use Ctrl+Shift+B to show or hide the bookmark bar.
Otherwise just go to Settings → Appearance and turn off bookmarks.
