Facing the same issue, while it could be a conflict within extensions, it still shouldn’t crash the browser. Crashing the extension if possible would make sense (I think I’ve seen Chrome do this). While its easy to restore the tabs (albeit it crashes again whenever you open the culprit tab), you can’t recover the incognito tabs.
I have to say Brave started crashing allot for me too a few updates back. It has been reliable but something must have changed.
I agree its hard to know if this is due to extension mall-function or something else but i also think that Brave should have better error handling to not crash the browser. Disable a extension or throw a warning about things that goes wrong is fine but crashes is never ok.
This isn’t mac specific. The same behavior is happening on my PC install of Brave. It also isn’t Privacy Badger specific, the same behavior happens with Privacy Possum’s extension installed. It also happens on WaPo for me and I have verified that it doesn’t happen on Chrome, just Brave.
I have also confirmed that it’s not due to an extension conflict. With all extensions disabled besides either Privacy Possum or Privacy Badger (one at a time), WaPo still crashes the browser.
This has been happening to me for a couple of months now - only on mac, not on my pc version of Brave. I have no extensions. Biggest culprits seem to be: playing words with friends on facebook, and if I go to shut down a tab that had been playing a youtube video.
Brave - Version 0.70.121 Chromium: 78.0.3904.70 (Official Build) (64-bit)
macOS 10.11.6. (El Capitan)
Extensions: Bitwarden P/W manager.
Problem: Brave crashes after startup on the
Startup page.
Have tried with Bitwarden disabled. Same result.
Tried: New profile, same result - crashes.
Hardware acceleration on or off - crashes.
This occurs about 50% of the time.
Have never had this happen with previous versions.
Also tried duck duck go as start page. Brave does not crash. BUT Bitwarden does.
Something incompatible Brave, Bitwarden or both??
Thanks for ideas/help.
On a side note same problem with Vivaldi.
Not on Chrome or Opera. Same extension.
** Brave shields on except scripts blocked. crosss-site cookies blocked. Device recognitions attempts blocked. Problem mainly occurs with scripts on. - have tried all off then turned on 1 by 1. **
**Only Brave flag setting I have changed: brave://flags/#dns-over-https - Enabled. - this also did not change crash behavior. enabled or default
Can anyone here tell me if they’re still experiencing crashes? Additionally, can you please report which OS you’re running, what Brave version, and any extensions you may have installed?
It would also help us figure out these issues if you turn on Automatic Crash reporting
– or sending them manually by going to brave://crashes
. You can also copy/paste your crash report IDs here.
yes, still experiencing the problem even after getting the latest from today…
no point of arguing with the customer support…
how do i turn automatic crash reporting to on?
31 crashes for me…always crashes when i go to yourstory.com, divyabhaskar.com
turned on Automatic Crash reporting
@parikhparth23,
In order for me to help you with this any further, I’m going to need you to answer all of the questions I’ve been asking:
1. Do you have any extensions installed? If so, which ones?
2. Have you tried clearing your cache/site data?
3. If you create a new/fresh browser profile(Main menu --> Create new profile
) does the browser behave the same way?
4. Does the browser crash when you go to a specific site? If so, what site(s)?
5. Try disabling Hardware Acceleration to see if that makes any difference:
Settings --> Additional Settings --> System --> Hardware Acceleration
ask your devs to look at those logs…too many questions to answer
I will pass on the information, but there are only 4 questions and one of them is yes/no. It’s a very busy time here at Brave and I don’t know when devs will be free to look at/diagnose these logs. Further, the more things we rule out, the less the devs will have to consider when diagnosing (if we don’t resolve it first).
- Extensions have been known to cause issues from time to time – even crashing the browser. If you have one of those installed, then we have our answer. In order to determine that, do you have any extensions installed?

Clearing cache/site data often shakes loose “bad bits” and other artifacts that can cause strange behavior. Doing so only takes a few clicks:
Settings --> History --> Clear browsing data
. - You can also do both of the above in one step (although all tests should be performed individually) by creating a new profile – which will start fresh with no data and no extensions. If one of those things was causing the crash, you should be able to browse normally using this profile. Pretty simple test:
Menu --> Create new profile
, see if the new profile crashes. -
Hardware Acceleration
manifests in a number of weird ways – simply toggle it off and see if the crashing persists:Settings --> Addtional --> System --> Hardware Acceleration
moved from brave to edge beta
Having problems with
https://gearbest.com/
started happening from last 2 updates…no idea what they changed on their end
and the bad thing is their QA team is not able to reproduce this.
