CPU spikes that lock up browser

Description of the issue:
CPU usage spikes randomly (usually a few minutes after launch) when browsing various pages. Seems to spike even when YouTube is not open.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Usually occurs soon after launching, but can occur seemingly at any time and isn’t reliably reproducible
  2. Involves subframe and browser CPU usage
  3. Tried removing extensions and re-installing Brave but the issues persisted
  4. Ending the subframe process resolves the issue

Expected result:
CPU spike which locks up browser
Brave Version:
|Brave| 1.10.97 Chromium: 83.0.4103.116 (Official Build) (64-bit)

@Apollo1,
Thanks for reaching out to us.
Can you try disabling Hardware Acceleration in settings to see if this resolves the issue?

You’ll find this in Settings --> Additional Settings --> System --> Hardware Acceleration

Ok I just disabled it. I’ll see if that helps. Thanks for the fast response!

Ok so I just opened Brave again and with only 1 tab open I got another spike and lock up after disabling hardware acceleration. Any suggestions?

@Apollo1,
Do you have Brave Sync enabled by chance?

If not, can you try creating a new browsing profile (Menu --> Create new profile) and see if the browser crashes the same when using the new profile?
