Can't download files from internet

Been using Brave for years, no issues. I’m on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS.

I went to download a file that was emailed to me. I save the file, it does not appear in my computer.

I tried with different email servers, no luck.

I tried saving the file with Firefox it worked ok.

Suddenly, and out of nowhere, I can’t save files using Brave.

Any ideas?

@Ticonderoga88 can you tell me how you installed Brave? Was it via the official curl command or did you use snap/flatpak?

oh wow, I don’t know, its been years - I’m not very technically savy with it, I probably did it the easiest way possible and likely by following the directions on the Brave page.

First, to check and see if this is a similar issue to one I’ve seen other Linux users encounter, can you please go to brave://settings/downloads and toggle the Ask where to save each file before downloading option “off” and then see if downloads go through?

How interesting. Yes, when I turn the option off, the docs went right to my “downloads” file without issue. I toggled it back on, it asked where I wanted them, I specified, and the download didn’t work.

Thank you for confirming.
Can you please try installing the following packages via Terminal, then test again?
xdg-desktop-portal-gtk and xdg-desktop-portal

You can do this by launching the Linux Terminal and using the following commands:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install xdg-desktop-portal xdg-desktop-portal-gtk

I ran both sets of commands as described and tried again, still won’t download when the destination is specified.

@Ticonderoga88 thank you for checking. Going to go ahead and open an issue for this and hopefully the team will be able to resolve this

I’ve opened the following issue:

You might need to reboot after installing the two missing packages.

I was writing to confirm this issue on Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS.
Version 1.77.97 Chromium: 135.0.7049.84 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Curl downloaded, not Snap, same issue and temporal fix of removing the “Ask where to save” also worked.
Will check the issue posted here for updates

Thanks for the advice but unfortunately, still not working after a restart.

Can you start the browser on the command line and share any relevant errors you see in the terminal when you download a file?

brave-browser-stable --enable-logging=stderr

I have the same thing going on here just now, for several weeks. I’m on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. I’ve already tried everything. Also uninstalled and reinstalled Brave. With Chrome I also had it, but after updating Chrome the problem was solved. But with Brave, the problem persists. I am getting tired of it silently.
