Brave Browser Doesn't Download Files

Description of the issue:
Downloading any files via Brave Browser doesn’t result in a download.

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.
Using Google Docs as an example.

  1. Open Brave Browser
  2. Hit up: docs.google.com and create…a doc
  3. Follow the download link and select any filetype that you’d like to download. This issue isn’t limited to filetype.
  4. As soon as a filetype is selected, Brave will open a window for the same, for a save location.
  5. Select a location…any location.
  6. Click “Save”.
  7. Rinse and repeat…as the frustration grows.

Actual Result (gifs and screenshots are welcome!):
A screenshot won’t show the lack of download.

Expected result:
I would expect a file to be downloaded to the location selected. None is. Selecting the “Downloads” menu item shows that nothing was downloaded.

Reproduces how often:
Consistently.

Operating System and Brave Version(See the About Brave page in the main menu):
Ubuntu 22.04 + Brave v About Brave Version 1.77.97 Chromium: 135.0.7049.84 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information:

  • Attempted to reset the browser. Issue remains.
  • Tested with other browsers. Other browsers are able to download successfully.
  • Toggled safe downloaded off and on. Issue remains.
  • Attempting to export bookmarks to an HTML file for migration to a different browser, fails. HTML file isn’t written out to the local drive.

SOLUTION?
I’ve found several posts on the internet that seem to indicate switching on (or off) the download location, in the settings, does temporarily fix the issue.

I’ve been having the same issue on Manjaro with the same version of Brave.

Same issue

  • Ubuntu 22.04
  • Brave 1.77.100

Happening to me too.

  • Ubuntu 24.04.1
  • Version 1.77.100 Chromium: 135.0.7049.100 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Installed Brave via the listing on the Ubuntu App Center (which works on top of snap)

Telling it to go straight to downloads folder rather than asking me where technically works, but this is an annoying issue. It was working fine as recently as April 16th for me, which I believe (after looking at snap history info) was on Brave version 1.76.82.

We have filed an issue for this on our Github:
