So not that i don’t beleive you, but can you please share a screenshot of what you see on your brave://settings/searchEngines page? Something like this:

So it does look like Google is the default at this time. I would wager this is an issue with the browser cache. If you were to open a Private browsing window or new profile, you likely would not have this issue in that profile/window.
I would recommend a couple things here:
Can you please visit duckduckgo.com, click on the “tune” icon, then click on Site settings --> Delete data then test and see if the default search in the browser works with the selected engine.
If the above does not work, can you please try clearing your cache/data in the browser in general by going to Settings --> Delete browsing data, relaunch the browser and then test to see if the issue is resolved.
