Browser is logging me out of sites when I close the browser

Troubleshooting technical issues is much easier when both the user and support agent practice clear communication. For this reason, we have provided the template below for you to fill out with information about your issue. Please provide as much detail as possible so we can most efficiently resolve your problem.

Description of the issue:
I will log into some websites and have the site set to keep me logged in since it is a private computer but when I close my browser and shut the computer down for the night every site that I did not log out of is not saved and I have to go through the whole thing again the next morning.
How can this issue be reproduced?

1.just close the browser and open it back up will reproduce the issue

I never had this problem when using the Google Chrome, Firefox, Vivaldi or Opera browsers.
If I go to brave://password-manager/settings I do have the Sign-in automatically` option enabled?

I checked in privacy and security and have the passwords and other sign in data unchecked.

I found something that suggested to “go to brave://settings/cookies and make sure you unchecked Clear cookies and site data when you close all windows” But when I go to brave://settings/cookies I do not see anything to uncheck for clearing cookies and site data when you close all windows.

If I go to privacy and security and click on delete browsing date again the box in basic for cookies and other site data is checked again, in the tab for advanced the box is again checked for passwords and other sign in information when I open that page after having closed the webpage.

I just downloaded and installed the browser the other day and I checked and it is up to date - version: 1.71.121 Chromium: 130.0.6723.91 (Official Build)(64bit)

I am running windows 10 home and it is up to date as well.

I do like the browser, but being logged out of sites that I state to keep me logged in only to find out that I am not logged in to those sites when I open the browser again, is not acceptable for me.

Is there any way to resolve this issue? I am not real computer literate so I will need step by step directions on how to resolve this issue.

Thank You

If I go to brave://settings/cookies my screen looks different than yours.

I hope that the screen shot shows up.

I did find this and it is not set to forget me when I close this site

Yeah . . . I have an out-of-date Brave Browser version for the Mac; stuck with it, because the Mac is old.

Anyway, I always use the Private Browing Only mode. All other settings are conservative, meaning, for privacy and security. I EXPECT Brave Browser to completely delete all cookies and caches when I quit the browser, and thus, also, log out.

That means, the Brave Browser (for privacy and security) that I use, is effectively NOT the Brave Browser (for convenience) that many others use.

Brave Browser Support member “Mattches” says:

“There is nothing in Brave that prevents you from staying logged into Google (other than the settings you mentioned previously) after closing and relaunching the browser.” (ref.: https://community.brave.com/t/issue-with-google-account-login-on-brave-browser/576751/3)

You might follow his comments at that link, trying what he suggests.

Also, you might try something along the lines of what I suggested:

Browser Cookie FAQs

What is a cookie?

A cookie is a small text file stored on your hard drive by web pages you visit.

The file - and the information in the file - is generated by the server-side application running the web site.

The server also has access to the cookie it gave you (but not to cookies created by other websites).

What does it do?

A cookie can be used to identify you to a website.

It doesn’t reveal personal information (because the data in the cookie came from the website’s server in the first place) - just identifies you as the same browser that visited earlier.

This is helpful for session-management (keeping you logged-in over the course of a single user-session), login persistence (the “Remember Me” or “Stay Logged In” feature you see in many apps and websites), and multi-tab browsing.

Why are cookies needed?

HTTP - the primary protocol used in web browsing to communicate with a web server - is an inherently stateless, sessionless computing experience

That means that each page load, each request, is an independent event, unrelated to the events that come before or after it.

[Therefore, keeping things organized] requires some kind of persistence mechanism, something that will alert the server that the current request from you is related to the previous one, that they are both from the same person on the same computer.

Cookies accomplish this. The server generates one the first time you visit a site.

It sends it to your browser, and your browser stores it.

On subsequent page loads, the browser informs the server of the relevant cookies currently being stored.

The server reads them and knows that this is the same browser as before.

@lmh, as long as you’re not set to clear cookies on exit, aren’t blocking cookies, and haven’t selected Forget me when I close this site, there’s likely nothing in Brave itself that would be logging you out.

You might try disabling Shields on the sites where this is happening to see if that resolves it.

If you’re not clearing cookies, it could be that something is voiding your cookies on specific sites. Brave’s fingerprint protection, for instance, randomizes certain details about your browser, such as the user agent. This can sometimes cause the site to re-verify your login if it detects these changes between sessions.

Another possibility is an extension that might be clearing cookies, or if you’re using a tool like CCleaner or Avast Cleanup, which may also be clearing cookies.

Just to confirm, is this happening on a few specific websites or across all sites?

I gave my whole spiel about cookies in the link below, if you care to give it a read…

when I go to brave://settings/cookies my screen does not show any “sites that can always use cookies” this is what I see and the odd thing is that I have not even been to the Giant website today and if I go there I am not logged in there either.

If I use the search and look for sites that can use cookies nothing comes up.
I will check out those links, thanks!

Saoiray - I did disable the shields for Giant which is why that one is showing up as in the image above, but when I go to that site, I have to log in again.

It is happening on all sites. I do have CCleaner on my computer but have not used it since installing the brave browser - until last night and I ran it last night hoping that maybe it would help, but it did not.

I did notice with Shields up there is an option to block all cookies, block 3rd party cookies and allow all cookies. The browser was already set to block 3rd party cookies when I installed the browser. I just changed it for my gmail account to allow all cookies, not sure if that will help or not.

I will switch off the block fingerprinting and see if that helps. As you can see I don’t have the slide over to the right for “forget me when I close this site”

the only extensions that have been installed are bitwarden at this time, and I need to log into that when I open the browser and that is just fine with me. Not sure if that helps or not.

@lmh that information they provided is outdated. In terms of cookie management, I pretty much touch on it at the two links below:

Just to confirm, you have tested this on Chrome and it doesn’t do the same thing there?

Guess also would like to ask you to try on a new profile in Brave. Go to the hamburger menu image → More Tools → Add new profile. This will create a second profile with most settings at default and no extensions disabled. If you can leave things as is on that profile and see if you have the issue as well on that profile, it would be nice.

NOTE
I say most settings at default because any custom content filters in Shields or any changes to brave://flags will persist across all profiles.

Which is perfect and generally what you want to use. Overall would say to keep like I suggest at Helpful Info & FAQ for Brave Users - #28 by Saoiray.

Heeelp!! why do all my posts keep getting removed. i’ve posted my issue 3 times and all keep getting blocked by some automatic system. how can i get help on this website!!!

I did make some changes > I went to the icon for shields up and saw that there was an option to either block all cookies, block 3rd party cookies or allow all cookies. I switched that option to allow all cookies and moved the slide over to the left for block fingerprinting (not sure what the heck that is, but I’ll worry about that later). Anyway, now when I go to some sites that I set on their site to remember me and as long as I don’t log out of the site before closing the browser, then the next time I open the browser and go to that site, I am still logged in.
I know that those steps were not suggested anywhere when searching for a resolution, but it is working for me.
Thanks for all the help!

I thought that my posts were being blocked as well Throw, but after less than 24 hours I got an email message telling me that my post was now visible. So maybe try posting your issue again or check your email account to see information from here stating that you post is now visible and if there are any replies to it.

When we visit websites, they can gather various details about us, like screen size, browser type, operating system, installed fonts, language settings, and more. When combined, these details can create a unique ‘fingerprint,’ allowing websites to recognize you even if you’re not logged in or using cookies.

Brave’s fingerprinting protection works by either blocking fingerprinting attempts or randomizing some of this information. This helps prevent websites and advertisers from tracking you across different sessions.

There’s more to it, but that’s a simple summary.

-NOTE- (edit)

Also, this ties into something I’ve mentioned before: cookies. Cookies are small files that websites save in your browser to remember who you are when you return. They save things like your login status or your preferences.

Sometimes, websites will use extra data about your device to verify these cookies. If the device details seem different — like changes to your browser, IP address, or system information — they may assume you’re an imposter and expire the cookie early, prompting you to log in again.

Websites like banks tend to be stricter about this, which means higher privacy protections can lead to more frequent logins. It’s the trade-off between convenience and privacy.

All my post are over 2 days old, the first one being a week old and is still blocked.

one 5 day old post also. @Saoiray PLEASE!

ok im just switching to firefox, cya

This happened to me in another chrome based browser, Vivaldi, and NOTHING worked, but finally I found the reason, and it was the most stupid one possible:

Since my misbehaving Vivaldi was portable, one day for testing purposes I moved its folder to another location, and it finally started working as it should and kept me logged in again after browser shutdown.
Changing the folder’s location worked, so the culprit was the portable apps folder where Vivaldi’s folder resided before. And why, you might think? Well, because since I wanted that portable folder the first one being shown on explorer, I put a ‘#’ as the 1st character in its name, since these symbols take precedent in alphabetical file sorting. That was it.
That # stopped the browser from keeping me logged in, but i renamed it without the # and no other changes in the name, it worked.
So, #PortableApps screwed with my login status, but PortableApps did not.
Who would ever think this was the reason??..
