Brave won't work

Description of the issue: Several days ago I updated Brave as requested. Today I began to have new tabs I launched to crash. They would not open. Reloading didn’t work. I quit Brave and restarted. Now Brave won’t open at all, and says there is no support for my version of Brave running under Mac OS 10.14.6. I suppose somehow it downloaded a version that isn’t compatible. I’ve spent the last two hours looking for a way to download the previous version of Brave, and I’m not finding it. Several articles mention github, but I do not find a version I can use there. I use Brave almost exclusively, so I really need to get this resolved. Thanks for your help!

How can this issue be reproduced? Not sure if it would work again, but have a Mac with 10.14.6 and try to download the latest version of Brave.

Expected result: Crashing tabs and eventually that Brave won’t open.

Brave Version( check About Brave): It won’t open, so I don’t know the number, but I’m pretty sure it’s the current version since I just downloaded it a few days ago.

Additional Information:

This is correct. Announcements went out and there have been conversations about this. Only Mac 10.15 and higher is compatible. In the top link here, it provides you a link to where to download the last known working version for your device and how to do it.

As to crashing, you normally would need to go to brave://crashes. If it says Send Now, then click on it and exit Brave for 10-30 seconds so it can upload. Then return to brave://crashes and you should see Uploaded Crash Report ID. If you copy/paste and share that along with information like which OS you’re using, which version of Brave, etc and developers might be able to let you know what’s causing your crash(es).

Thanks very much for your response!

I don’t see where the “top link” is. I did go back to Get Hub. In all my internet digging, I did at least know which version of Brave to look for. Then I waded through all the options and chose one that was listed as both “general” and “dmg.” Tried it and it worked.

This to me was the most confusing part: all of the different options. I’m still not sure that I have the best one, but for now it’s working.

This above in reference to the newest version of Brave not working with Mac OS 10.14.6.

I guess I missed the communication about this new one not working with my older system. I am curious about this, though. I’ve been using Mac since 1989, and I believe this is the first time a software package has downloaded and tried to install on an incompatible system. It seems the new software usually “knows” that it can’t run on that OS, and doesn’t try. Am I wrong about this?

I think I can attribute the crashes 100% to the newer Brave not being compatible with my OS 10.14.6. Maybe the odd thing is that it ran for a few days before it started crashing.

Saoiray, thanks for your help! I’m very grateful to have it running again.

If you know of a way I can confirm I’m running the right version of Brave, I’d be, once again, very grateful. The one that downloaded and installed says: "Version 1.57.64 Chromium: 116.0.5845.188 (Official Build) (x86_64)

@Simeon I believe that’s it but I’m not quite sure. As the instructions mentioned, you would have wanted to download the Brave-Browser-universal.dmg file in the list. Guess what’s most important is you said everything is working fine, right?

Also, I just want to remind you that in having to use the older version of Brave, you’ll have some features like Rewards, Shields, VPN, Leo, etc that may not be accessible or won’t have all proper features/capabilities. You’ll also not have a lot of security patches, so it can be more vulnerable.

Side Note/Question
Upgrading your Mac to 10.15 is free. Not sure if you want to consider doing that so you can have better security on your device and access to all the newest versions of Brave and other programs on your computer. Have you checked to see if your device could upgrade?
