Thank you Mattches. I was just getting ready to follow your first set of instructions but I will endeavor to do this HTML thing first, as you advise. ("…export your bookmarks as an HTML file manually"). The problem is, I am a computer illiterate and I don’t know how to do that. I suppose I look for some particular file somewhere on my HD, save it, and then insert it into the new version’s folder or whatever. Am I close? I would appreciate your further guidance on that. Please bear in mind that the original problem is that I cannot get into my current Brave program (Muon?) so that I can’t do anything that is dependent on having Brave open.
@flarmath,
Happy to help out.
So in your image it appears that you’re unable to visit websites, but you should be able to export your bookmarks still. If you open your (Muon) browser and click on Bookmarks
on the ribbon at the top (see image), you should see options in the drop down menu to Export bookmarks...
:
Simply select Export bookmarks
and pick a location easy to remember/find on your PC (in your Downloads, for example). Click Save
and the browser should export your bookmarks as a readable .HTML
document.
Once you’ve done this, open the new version of Brave (assuming you have this installed already), then click on Menu --> Settings --> Bookmarks
. On this page, you’ll see a “three dots” icon on the top-right:
Click the icon to reveal the additional options, then Import bookmarks
:
Select the .HTML
file you exported earlier and you should now have all your bookmarks in your new browser!
Please let me know if any of the above is unclear or if the process did not work and I’d be happy to dig into the issue with your further.
Thank you, but the problem is that I cannot open the bookmarks by clicking the bookmarks tab. When I do that I get the first red screen posted above. That’s the red screen I get when I click almost anything associated with Brave, including the icon for opening Brave itself. This is the original problem I posted here. (fmarier gave that his best shot. Perhaps you have some idea of what that problem is. Solving it would of course obviate all this how-to-salvage-my-bookmarks problem.
Anyway,is there another way to save the bookmarks besides using Export?
I have saved the following files that I found by searching my HD for “bookmarks” and “favicons” (someone told me that favicons were important to bookmarks):
Bookmarks
Bookmarks.bak
Favicons
I was clicking around on them and somehow opened one. Some combination of clicks opened Favicons (I think) but I can’t reproduce it now. Anyway, it contains a list of every one of my Brave bookmarks along with some mumbo jumbo that means nothing to me and probably is crystal clear to you. Here’s what just a couple of them look like; there are many more:

So the information seems to be there. This seems to be the mother lode for my bookmarks and if I could get that into the new install I might be back in business with bookmarks. Could that be done? Would it be something as simple as copying these files over the same files in the new install?
Or maybe there is another alternative. I’m all eyes and your help is certainly appreciated.
So we’re not interested in getting to the bookmarks page in the browser. We’re only interested in clicking that tab and clicking Export
– you should still be able to click on that tab even with the red page:
You should see the export option on the tab directly:
Mattches - Thank you for pointing out the obvious to me. What can I say…I think I was flummoxed by seeing yet another red screen and forgot to take that last step, clicking “export.” May I say for myself, “Duh!”
So I did as you directed and it worked perfectly and all is good now with Brave. Thank you very much for sticking with me on this - I appreciate your guidance very much.
@flarmath,
So glad that everything worked out for you. My pleasure – please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions or concerns.
Thank you.
