Brave Sync results in multiple occurences of computer

Description of the issue: When one creates sync list Brave creates duplicate entries for my main computer. One for each day.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Create a sync chain using Windows10 computer and other devices
  2. Use your main computer for a week

Expected result: You should only see one entry in the Sync list for the computer not multiple entries

Brave Version( check About Brave): Version 1.69.160 Chromium: 128.0.6613.114 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Additional Information: There is always an entry in Sync Devices list that says (This device) plus additional entries without (This Device)

@fedup just to confirm, are you saying this is still happening ever since it updated? Asking because if you look at Release Channel 1.69.160 one of the announced changes was:

  • Fixed issue where synced devices could be duplicated in certain cases. (#40130)

I just went in there and deleted 5 or 6 of those entries with the oldest one being Aug 19th. I just went in there last week and deleted a lot more of the entries.

Update went out on the 29th, so it’s been like 3-4 days only. It’s possible they were there from beforehand. Especially as not sure if you got the update same day or sometime after. Guess big question I’ll have is whether you have anything appear here in the next couple days.

Will keep an eye out on it. A post in the Brave subredit along with 2 replies 3 days ago got deleted as being a duplicate. Was told to search the subredit. I did and could not find anything and just gave up.

I’m on 1.69.160 and have a duplicate sync device with today’s date on it (2 September). This is on a profile which did not have duplicates on it before. My last upgrade was on the 30th August.

On 28 August I noticed 2 of my several profiles had duplicate sync device entries, and I checked the others too. For both of the affected ones I deleted the sync chain and made a new one, and then made backups, which means I can be sure of which profiles were affected and what day it was.

@Mythical5th to confirm, all devices on that sync chain are on the same version? Not sure if perhaps you had any of the devices/profiles that might have been related to prior version and want to affirm this before tagging anyone back in from Brave on it or asking for more details.

In my case it is ALWAYS the same device that is being duplicated. That is my main computer which I use every day. Other devices are Windows10 and iOS.

Today I noticed another duplicate entry in my desktop computer. I deleted it. I went to my phone it is at 1.68.1 and there are no updates. There are other devices on the sync chain but they are rarely used. The only other Win10 device in the chain is at 1.169.160 it shows a whole bunch of duplicate entries for my main computer in the sync chain. The same thing for the iOS device. It too shows duplicates of my main computer which is at 1.169.160

The versions which contain the fix are:

1.69.156 - Stable
1.70.92 - Beta
1.71.31 - Nightly

Sorry, no, the fix prevents from appearing duplicates in future. The duplicates which were already created should be removed manually, because the name of the device cannot be used as a unique parameter.

@Alexey they mentioned using 1.69.160 which would be after the 1.69.156 you quoted, right?

I mean, obviously not for iOS which is still on 1.68 but I’m not sure if was any fix needed for iOS? And it sounds like @fedup was saying it’s Desktop which is using the 1.69.xx or so version that’s having the issue.

Is there anything we can have people look at or share which might help in troubleshooting if the issue that we assume was fixed still is happening?

I can only keep an eye on things here since this is the only place I got a reponse to the issue. I gave up posting on the subReddit. I have deleted all the duplicate entries off the 2 Windows 10 systems here and will check them in a couple of days. I would hold off taking my input as gospel unless I report back more duplicates showing up on either Windows 10 systems here in coming days.

Yeah, Reddit is a bit of a gray area. It’s maintained by Brave and has some support, but it’s not really a primary spot for help. Typically best to avoid it and come here with issues.

I was a frustrated long time user who posted at the subreddit and had 2 people reply to the problem only to then have my posted deleted because it supposedly was a duplicate.

I remember that iOS does not produces duplicated devices, but it obviously can receive them is other device generates them.

Just OS and the browser version should be enough to understand should it generate duplicates or no.

I have yet to see any duplicates show up on my main Win10 computer after 5 days of deleting all the duplicates off it and another Win10 box here.
