Description of the issue:
When using the “Continue Where Left Off” On Startup setting for Brave, the browser is opening tabs that I had closed days before instead of the tabs I had open when the browser was closed.
I only became aware of this issue around two weeks ago, and was hoping it would fix itself in time, but it has not.
I have four tab groups, three of which are synced. I’ve noticed the issue primarily on my most-used synced tab group which is for YouTube.
I have my Watch Later playlist in the tab group wherein I go through it picking and choosing videos to watch. If I end up watching video 300, then close the browser, the next day I open the browser it’s on video 150 - which is no longer in the playlist as I removed it days prior. This is consistently happening at this point. It doesn’t even matter what webpage I leave the tab on, as the next time I open Brave it is back on video 150. To make matters worse, hour-long videos instead load back to prior watch time. If I watch until 2:00:00, then close Brave and reopen, I’m back at 0:15:00, which is what it was at when I first started watching, which was days ago.
I turned off “Save Group” on the tab group, and the issue appears to have been resolved? It’s weird though, because when I initially created and ticked “Save Group” on the tab groups, I didn’t have this issue. It only started occurring recently.
Ok, with the recent update that made it so Tab Groups are automatically saved, this bug has now come back again. The way Tab Groups are saved is making it so that tabs revert to the URL they were on when the tab was initially saved in the Tab Group, undoing any progress on websites. See original post.
The linked thread is not the same issue. The issue in this thread relates to tabs saving the URL or state they’re in when the group they’re in is created, i.e. opening a grouped tab at youtube.com/subscriptions but then navigating to a video. Closing and reopening Brave reopens the tab in the group at the original subscriptions URL instead of the video URL.
Your issue appears to be a different issue entirely, relating to tabs being removed from the groups.
@FenekkuKitsune
You said that your tab groups are Synced – I’m wondering if the browser is pulling the Synced information from your other device(s) on relaunch and using those as “where you left off”.
Can you try temporarily disabling Sync on the PC you’re encountering this issue on, then see if the issue still occurs when you close/relaunch the browser?
Not a great idea! I disabled sync for tab groups earlier today and lost all my tabs groups - none was open, but I had a lot under the Bookmarks Bar icon and they all went. I actually wanted them removed, so that was fine, but then I reverted to Sync Everything and at some point all the groups returned.
I concur. After the groups came back I deleted them one by one and found a group I still need and hadn’t actually closed, but it was missing from my tab strip. I’ve transferred everything to bookmarks now.
The way I fixed the issue beforehand was simply disabling sync on the tab groups. But, p much immediately after, Brave updated and now tab groups permanently have sync enabled. So, the issue is now permanent.
Not sure I understand – the Sync tab groups option in Brave Sync can still be toggled off. What do you mean when you say they are enabled “permanently”?
I don’t have that option, or at least I can’t find it. Brave updated shortly after I made this thread. Prior to the update, individual tab groups could be set to sync or not sync. After the update, ALL tab groups are automatically set to sync.
