Brave not allowing me to download files it deems dangerous

Trying to download Kexsetuprelease from here: https://github.com/i486/VxKex/releases/tag/Version1.1.1.1375

and Brave is stopping me from doing it, automatically blocking the download.

I wish to know how to make it so that Brave doesn’t stop the downloading, considering that it’s a safe file.

@Sergio1992,
This is due to Safe browsing which you can disable temporarily, download the file, then re-enable the feature. Note that I highly recommend keeping this feature enabled for the security of your browser/data as it does a lot under the hood to protect you from malicious sites/files.

Settings --> Privacy & Security --> Safe browsing

I have Safe Browsing disabled and yet Brave is blocking download of executables unless I go into the download list and manually verify them.

Naturally there is no indication that the download is not proceeding normally. Then when I find the download missing and remember to verify it, Brave suggests that I should enable Safe Browsing to remove the need to verify.

With Safe Browsing disabled, Brave should NOT be blocking anything.

Using latest Brave on Windows 10:
Version 1.68.141 Chromium: 127.0.6533.120 (Official Build) (64-bit)

@gneuner I’m not sure which specific message you and/or @Sergio1992 were getting but there are two possibilities I can think of. The first is Safe Browsing as Mattches mentioned.

The other is HTTPS settings in Shields. I know some download links redirect to an HTTP and this can trigger a warning that it’s not safe. This is especially true if you have Upgrade connections to HTTPS set to Strict (global setting) or Only Connect with HTTPS (in the site specific settings)

If you could show a screenshot of the specific message you’re getting, it would be helpful.

Hi Saoiray,

Upgrade connections to HTTPS is set to standard.
Nothing site specific.

This is just an example - the issue occurs with any site that serves executables, and it began sometime in the last ~60 days (since the last time I updated a bunch of installer programs).

I found a flag called Override download danger level which is default/disabled. Enabling the flag removes the need to verify executable downloads, but I don’t know what unknown dangers it might open up if I leave it that way. Of course I do have AV, uBlock and some content filtering via OpenDNS on top of Brave.

addendum:
Oh, and the file in question above IS signed by the developer. I can understand questioning unsigned files though I would expect a pop-up message rather than silently blocking the download.

@gneuner okay, so that’s one I never had seen and is weird enough. Guess will hope @Mattches can follow up and loop in the devs if not a known way to disable that.

I would be interested to know if you’re able to download files normally without these things enabled. Would you be willing to test this briefly by temporarily disabling your AV and OpenDNS filtering (specifically) in Brave and trying to download something again? Ideally something you’re 100% sure is safe.

@Mattches: disabling AV, uBlock and content filtering makes no difference.

I see that Brave got updated since last time, so it seems I tried your test with the latest version.
Version 1.69.153 Chromium: 128.0.6613.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Honestly I didn’t expect disabling things would make a difference as I also have Firefox. Both browsers have the same set of add-ons with identical settings. I use only 3 add-ons:

  • uBlock,
  • cookie autodelete,
  • zoom page we

Of these, only uBlock possibly could prevent a download, and I had thought of and dismissed that already before posting here.

I know Brave has built-in some of the same filtering capabilities as uBlock. I do NOT use them both: the content filter lists in Brave all are disabled. I rely on uBlock so I can keep Brave and FF synchronized (as closely as possible).
DNS based filtering obviously is the same for any application on my LAN.

Even with AV and all content filtering, FF happily will download files that Brave complains about. It really seems to be something with Brave - or possibly underneath in the Chromium base, which I don’t have (and don’t want) to try.

btw: I am a software developer myself (coming up on 35 years now). Currently I do middleware and backend DBMS on Linux. In past lives I did real-time industrial QA/QC vision systems, and factory automation systems on both Windows and Unix.
Which is simply to say that I’m not a novice. You can ask complex questions and get answers if it won’t require ridiculous amounts of of time [which I don’t have much of lately. 8-( ].

you can use the “Override download danger level” flag at your own risk

“brave://flags” and search for it and set it to “Enabled”.

THIS IS AT YOUR OWN RISK. make sure you know what you are downloading

+1 to this incredibly annoying issue.

I set Safe Browsing to disabled for a reason. Brave shouldn’t be blocking my downloads. Period.

Fix this bug please.

Yeah, I am aobut to loose my good attitudes with the like 50th time I get these stupid nag screens. Why is there no option to turn this off? Going back to Firefox by now. This is a horrible experience.

This issue is actually a Chromium change and we are working to see how we can make this easier to navigate for users:
