This is an ongoing problem. Brave will happily go full screen to watch a Youbue video but when exiting full screen using the on-screen icon, or by double-clicking the window, or by using the escape key, the browser will not return fully to window mode. It returns to the reduced size correctly with the correct reduced border but the window content is still trying to render full screen.
At this point the video will freeze solid but the sound will continue with a completely frozen window. Trying to do anything with the mouse does absolutely nothing, it is a completely frozen window at this point.
If multiple clicks are persistently made on the close button then eventually it will try and close the window. This appears to be a “stuck-in-a-loop” problem, only polling the mouse when the thread glitches out.
The rest of the system is working fully, including any other open Brave windows, and nothing else is affected by this error. Only the currently focused Brave window is affected, leading me to think (maybe incorrectly) that the issue is not an OS issue per se.
This issue will happen totally at random and does not appear to be linked to memory usage, although memory usage is rather high (between 200 to 600 Mb on the affected window) despite there being 16Gb of RAM in the PC. Reproducing this error is a case of “wait until it happens because it will definitely happen” scenario.
I am currently using the [Version 1.76.81 Chromium: 134.0.6998.166 (Official Build) (64-bit)
] (https://brave.com/latest/) as of the date of this post and I installed it using the “apt install…” method as described on the official Brave website. I am not using the snap version.
I am using a fully tested proprietary nvidia driver for my nVidia GTX 1050ti card which works very well with the rest of the system, including gaming, with no lock-ups. This makes me think that the problem is a Brave coding issue and not a driver issue.
If anybody who is knowledgeable with Linux Ubuntu 20.04.6 can shed some light on this I would be very very grateful. Oh, and before anybody recommends I upgrade to Ubuntu 24.04, my PC is rather old and when I upgrade to the Ubuntu 24 distro it dies horribly and crashes and burns beyond recovery. I can’t run it on my current PC unfortunately
Thanks in advance…
