Brave crashing immediately when opened this morning

Description of the issue:

I open brave, a blank window appears for less than 1 second then closes. A .dmp file is produced in C:\Users<user>\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\Crashpad\reports

If I rename the User Data folder, the browser opens on a fresh profile, but this is a last resort to ditch my 3 year old profile.

I leave my computer on overnight so this happened without me doing anything or a Windows restart. It was working last night and now this.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Open the browser

Expected result:
The browser works.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Can’t get this at the moment

Additional Information:

@r567girib6 can you confirm your Brave version, and Windows version? Did you add any new extensions? Do you have crash reports enabled?

Thanks in advance!

Brave version is potentially 131.1.73.89 if the folder structure is to be believed.
Windows 10 version 10.0.19045 Build 19045

I did not add anything. This started happening overnight. I don’t know if I have crash reports enabled but I have a .dmp file for every time I’ve tried to open it this morning.

@r567girib6 can you please go to brave://crashes and

  • if you have automatic crash reporting is enabled (Settings --> Privacy/Security --> Automatically send diagnostic reports), please respond back here with the crash report ID
  • If Automatically send diagnostic reports is not enabled, ensure you click Send on these crash reports listed on the page, then reply here with the crash report ID

Thank you!

I can’t get to that page because brave is closing and if I rename User Data folder to get it to open, there’s no crash reports availalble.

Thanks @r567girib6. Do you by chance know which version you upgraded from?

I don’t. Like I said, it was working last night, I left my computer on overnight, and now this. A flash of a window and then nothing. Can you not do anything with these crash dmp files?

@r567girib6 would you be willing to share which extensions that you do have installed on Brave?

If you’re able to, can you try launching Brave with extensions disabled via terminal, using brave.exe --disable-extensions?

Thank you

--disable-extensions doesn’t seem to work whether I do it from command line or on the shortcut itself. Same flash of a blank window.

I had a ton of extensions. Easily 20+. Does it matter if disabling them didn’t fix the issue?

Thanks for the info @r567girib6, that’s helpful. Do you happen to have the webtorrent extension installed?

Can you try launching brave using brave.exe --enable-logging=stderr and share what it shows on the terminal?

no webtorrent extension installed afaik

Thanks @r567girib6, one last ask for the moment, can you share the .dmp file as well?

Sure, may it contain personal info, and if so is there a way for me to send it privately?

Thanks @r567girib6, I’ll send you a DM where it can be shared privately. The only people that will see it are the Brave developers that I’ll share it with in attempt to get to the root of your issue.

Thanks for sending @jack.007, can you confirm your OS and Brave version?

Win 11 and Version 1.73.91 Chromium: 131.0.6778.85 (Official Build) (64-bit)

Thanks @jack.007 for the crash reports, reviewing.

@jack.007 can you toggle on the memory saver feature as part of brave://settings/system?

If possible, would you also be able to take a screenshot from the system and browser task managers?
