Bookmarks bar on new tab does not show in Normal Window

Description of the issue:
When “Homepage” under “New Tab Page Shows” is selected, bookmarks bar on new tab does not show in Normal Window, only in Private Window.
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Enable “Show home button” in the Appearance section, tick the “Enter custom web address” and input custom URL.
  2. Under “Show bookmarks”, select “Only on the new tab page”.
  3. In New Tab Page section, select “Homepage” for the “New Tab Page Shows”.

Expected result:
Bookmarks bar does not show when opening a new tab in Normal Window.
In Private Window, bookmarks bar WILL show when opening a new tab.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
1.49.120

Additional Information:
In Normal Window, when you select “Dashboard” or “Blank Page”, the bookmarks bar behaves as expected and will appear on a new tab and disappear again when continue to another URL, but it does not work when selecting “Homepage”.

In Private Window, Any of the 3 selections, “Dashboard”, “Blank page” and “Homepage” will have the expected behaviour of the bookmarks bar.

This bug is identical in both Windows and Ubuntu.

Hi there @AccessDenied please accept my apologies for this issue. Let me kindly inform you that I was able to reproduce this bug on my end, however only when having Show bookmarks set on Only on the New tab page. If you select to show it Always, the bookmarks bar appears on the new tab.

Thanks for your reply.

However, the whole idea with showing the bookmarks bar on new tab this way is that you get more space when it disappears when you continue to other website. Just how it works in private window. Normal and private window should both behave the same with the same settings.
We don’t want to “always” show bookmarks bar when you have the great option to only show it on the new tab page.

On this case, try disabling your extensions or creating a new profile on Brave to see if the issue persist after performing those steps.

You can open a new profile by going to Main menuCreate a new profile

  1. On your computer, open Brave.
  2. At the top right, click MenuMore toolsExtensions.
  3. On to the extension you want to remove, click Remove.
  4. Confirm by clicking Remove.

Let me know if that works.
Regards.

With “expected behaviour” in private window I mean that it all works as intended, i.e. the bookmarks bar appears on new tab and disappears when continuing to other websites, as it should, with any of the 3 selections.

But in normal window, when “homepage” is selected it does not work as intended, the Bookmarks bar does not appear on new tab.

This is the case on freshly installed Brave Browser on different machines both in Linux and Windows without any extensions, and with different user profiles as well.

It’s so simple , it’s a bug. It’s also a contradiction. You want bookmarks bar to appear “only on new tab page” but it does not appear with “homepage” selected in normal window!! Only works in private window!

Just to test this is not present on other Brave versions, try installing the Beta or Nightly version of Brave to see if the issue persists.

Be waiting for your response.

The issue is identical in both Beta (1.50.93) and Nightly (1.51.38). With described settings, Bookmarks bar appears on new tab in Private Window but not in Normal Window.

Hi again @AccessDenied sorry for the delay in the response, are you still experiencing this same issue or has it been resolved.

Be waiting for your response.

No improvements. The issue has not been resolved by the Brave developement team.

Have a look at this video for comparison between the Normal window and Incognito/private window:

As can be seen, same settings but different behaviour of the bookmarks bar.
The behaviour in private window is correct, namely that the bookmarks bar appear on a new tab and disappear when entering another webpage.
