Bookmark list disappears until relaunch

Description of the issue:
After opening a Private Window, Bookmarks menu no longer lists bookmarks, just the usual 3 menu items at the top.

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Launch browser.
  2. Check Bookmarks menu - verify list of saved bookmarks and folders display normally.
  3. Open a New Private Window. Go to any site.
  4. Close Private Window.
  5. Check Bookmarks menu again - verify saved bookmarks and folders are no longer display, just the 3 items at the top.
  6. Close the browser.
  7. Relaunch browser - verify Bookmarks show full list of saved bookmarks and folders again.

Expected result:
After closing Private Window, Bookmarks window should be unaffected.

Brave Version( check About Brave):
Version 1.47.171 Chromium: 109.0.5414.87 (Official Build) (arm64)

Additional Information:
macOS Monterey version 12.6.2 (21G320)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention and I’m sorry to hear you are going through this. Just one question, did you have the bookmark sync enabled?

I’m not sure what bookmark sync is. I search for bookmarks and sync. I haven’t set up any Sync functionality. So, bookmark sync is very likely set to whatever the default value is. I hope that helps, or please tell me where to see that setting.

I replaced the Brave-Browser app with
Version 1.47.186 Chromium: 109.0.5414.119 (Official Build) (arm64)
(https://brave.com/latest/)

Sorry, but the issue is unchanged. It doesn’t seem to matter what site I go to in the Private window.

I checked one more thing. With a normal window open and a private window open, the Bookmarks menu is perfect in both windows. The Bookmarks menu is truncated only when I close the private window, leaving only the normal window still open. In this case, I closed the private window by clicking the ‘x’ on the single tab that was open.

I did one more check, after restarting Brave. Opened normal window, then opened private window as before. This time I had sites open in 2 tabs on the private window. I closed the window, not each tab. Bookmark menu was fine in both windows until I closed the private window. Apparently, the issue is occurring in conjunction with closing the private window.

I hope that helps to pinpoint where things are misbehaving in the code. (I’m a developer myself, and I know it helps to have details)

I tried it:
Version 1.51.2 Chromium: 111.0.5563.50 (Official Build) nightly (arm64)

The issue with the bookmarks is unchanged in Nightly. Sorry.
