Boards.4chan.org and boards.4channel.org Settings Persistence

Any custom settings (“4Chan settings”, not any Brave Browser settings) for https://boards.4channel.org/ and https://boards.4chan.org/ will occasionally revert to defaults, seemingly every few days. These settings include filters, themes, and keyboard shortcuts for example.

I believe the issue is present with default settings as well as when Brave has been set to Allow Fingerprinting and all Cookies for the sites. I have also added the domains under “Sites that can always use cookies”.

This issue does not occur when using Firefox. It’s strange to me that it seems to occur only after several days, and not when a new session is started.

This is my first post, please excuse any errors I may have made.

Hello there @asdfiwefjo please accept my apologies for this issue, please provide me with the Brave version you are using and OS information in order to further investigate.

Be waiting for your response.

Hello Kevin,

I’m using Brave Version 1.47.186 Chromium: 109.0.5414.119 (Official Build) (64-bit) with auto-updates enabled on both Windows 10 64-bit and Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS. Thank you for your time.

@asdfiwefjo

Does this behavior happen on both OS? Please try disabling your extensions to see if the settings do not reset overtime, also try saving your custom settings on another chromium browser such as Chrome to see if this happens there.

Hello Kevin,

Yes, this issue occurs when using either OS with no extensions. This issue does not occur when using Mozilla Firefox.

If it happens on other Chromium based browsers, it could be related to chromium itself rather than with Brave, as Firefox used Gecko as its engine.

I’ve shared this with our team and I’m waiting for further information on the matter. Once our team has answers, I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hello Kevin,

Much appreciated, thank you.

Any updates on this topic?

@asdfiwefjo sorry for the long delay, we’re currently investigating at the moment.

Be back once a workaround or a solution is found. accept my apologies once again.

@asdfiwefjo,
Can you confirm that you don’t have any data set to be cleared “on exit” (Settings --> History --> Clear browsing data --> [On exit])?

If not, while this is not an ideal solution, a useful test would be to turn Shields off entirely for the site and test to see if this data still gets reset. If it does, feel free to re-enable Shields and we can try other options.

I will also ask some of our Android team to test the behavior and see if they’re able to reproduce it.

@asdfiwefjo hi again, are you still experiencing this same issue or it no longer appears?

Please let me know.

Regards.

@Kevin_cc apologies for the late reply, thanks so much for your assistance. I have verified that I have no data set to be cleared on exit, and have had disabled Shields for boards.4channel.org for a few days now. The issue seems to occur every 7-10 days, so I will continue to monitor and report back. Thanks again.

@asdfiwefjo no worries and thanks for letting me know. If you have any other comments or concerns, please let me know.

Regards.

@Kevin_cc it seems the issue persists even after disabling Shields on boards.4channel.org. I’m not sure this is always the case, but this particular time, the “style” of the page (available in a drop-down menu in the lower-right corner of the page) has been defaulted, but the “settings” (available in the top-right corner of the page) seem to have been preserved. I believe these settings are normally defaulted in addition to the style.

@asdfiwefjo try creating a new profile by going to main menu > create a new profile and access those pages without changing any setting within Brave and try to change the site settings to see if they remain as you left them.

Let me know if that works.

Hi there @asdfiwefjo are you still experiencing this same issue or did it got solved?

Please let me know.
