All NY Times links are opening in private window when right clicking "open in new tab"

Description of the issue:
How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Follow this link for example and click on any result: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=ny+times+articles&t=osx&iar=news&ia=news
  2. Try with other search engines (e.g. Google)
  3. Try with other browsers (e.g. Chrome, Safari)

Expected result:
It works everywhere but on Brave
Brave Version( check About Brave):
[Version 1.17.75 Chromium: 87.0.4280.88 (Official Build) (x86_64)]
Additional Information:
I turned off all extensions too (I only use 5 reputable ones) and that wasn’t the issue either.

@752bfc1c933407ba6a19,
Can you share a short screen recording of the behavior? Not sure I’ve ever seen/heard of this before and on my end I get the intended result:

Here’s a link. https://www.dropbox.com/s/rpp5kq5xkr5qiec/Bug.mp4?dl=0
It doesn’t work by right click or just regular clicking. Looks like it’s trying to open in regular browser, then moves to Private for some reason?

For more info … I am a NY Times subscriber, so I was able to login into their account in non-private mode, but even when I am logged in, it opens in Private mode.

@752bfc1c933407ba6a19,
Can you go to Menu --> Settings --> Extensions and check and see if the Automatically redirect .onion sites option is enabled? If so, please disable it and your problem should be resolved.

Thanks. That worked. Can I ask why? I wasn’t attempting to click NY Times in Tor.

When that option is enabled, it basically clicks that button (the one in the image I shared) for you. The browser essentially checks to see if a site has a .onion site available. If so, the browser will launch the site in a tor window (since tor can traverse the .onion network of sites).

You should no longer encounter this issue with that option disabled.
