Brave Version( check About Brave):
[
Version 1.18.78 Chromium: 87.0.4280.141 (Official Build) (64-bit)
]
Additional Information:

brave rewrite the URI to a nonexistent onion URL and opens a tor window.
Even when I click on the version in about it converts:
https :// brave.com/latest/
to
https :// brave5t5rjjg3s6k.onion/latest/

It works in any other browser correctly and open the NYT unchanged.

I have to open a different browser to read NYT, and probably other locations.

Simply typing nytimes.com in the address field opens already: https :// www.nytimes3xbfgragh.onion/

I am not a fan of rewritten URIs unless I ask for/permit it.

Please advise

Hello, I have followed the steps and it has worked correctly for me. The page did not redirect me to a .onion site, although it gave me the option to do so.

Go to your Brave Browser configuration and Search Engine section, look for the option “automatically redirect .onion sites” and deactivate it

Hope this helps!

Also, you may not know what .onion sites are, https://wikipedia.org/wiki/.onion.

Onion sites are only accessible through Tor (Brave has Tor implemented in one of its private windows).
