This started 3 to 4 days ago, and has repeatedly happened every day. Ill be watching a youtube live stream, and itll suddenly get really choppy, freeze, then show an error that it ran out of memory. I have 32gb installed, and have not run out of total memory.
I have not installed any new extensions or changed any settings. But it did (coincidentally?) start right after the youtube fix came out.
I do notice a CPU increase a minute or two before the crash
Ok. So this has been continuing every day for me, and Im sitting here watching a youtube stream where it happened again, and I look at the live chat and people are talking about the same issue happening to them!
And its not just Brave, its other chromium browsers as well, but the common factor is youtube. But the odd thing is, Ive looked at youtube help forums and cannot find anyone talking about it there either. Yet theres several people in this one youtube chat talking about it… It makes no sense? You would think youtube tabs crashing with out of memory errors would be a bigger deal and be the number one issue being talked about.
Same thing has happened to me (but for like 6-9 months now its driving me a bit mad). But the funny thing is nobody i know had the same problem (I am the IT Guy for a Large number of people) Do you have any extension like Return Youtube Dislike or dark reader?
It sounds like you’re encountering a known issue that has been affecting some users across multiple Chromium-based browsers, including Brave, especially after recent changes to YouTube’s video player or streaming backend. While the exact cause isn’t always clear, here are some potential solutions:
- Clear Browser Cache: Sometimes, corrupted cache data can cause memory issues. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies and see if the problem persists.
- Disable Hardware Acceleration: This feature can cause issues with video playback, especially in browsers like Chrome and Brave. To disable it:
- Go to
Settings
>System
> Toggle off “Use hardware acceleration when available.” - Restart your browser.
- Update Browser: Ensure your browser is up-to-date, as updates may fix compatibility issues with YouTube.
- Try an Incognito/Guest Window: Open an incognito or guest window and see if the issue happens there. This can help rule out extensions or settings causing the problem.
- Check for Memory Leaks or Resource Hogs: Open the Task Manager (
Shift + Esc
in Chrome/Brave) and look for any processes consuming excessive CPU or memory before the crash. - Test with a Different Browser: If this is specific to Chromium-based browsers, try using Firefox or Edge to see if the issue is browser-related or if it persists across all browsers.
- Reduce Video Quality: If the issue seems to happen with high-quality streams, try lowering the video resolution on YouTube to reduce the memory demand.
- Disable YouTube’s New Features: Occasionally, YouTube experiments with features that might introduce bugs. You could try using a different version of YouTube (e.g., “YouTube Classic” through browser extensions or settings) or check for any specific updates from YouTube regarding recent fixes.
If none of these solutions work, it might be worth reporting the issue to YouTube’s support or on relevant community forums to see if there’s a more widespread fix in development.
It’s frustrating that the issue isn’t getting more attention on their help forums, but given that several users are mentioning it in YouTube chats, there may be an underlying issue that’s still being worked on by YouTube or browser developers.
