Youtube static Preroll Ads Hounding Me

Description of the issue:
I’m getting static pre-roll ads on youtube. nowhere else. this happens in my profile and also incognito. Seems that youtube give me a blank screen stating “includes paid promotion” while it struggles against brave ad blocking. After 10 to 15 seconds, I get a static image of an ad with a skip button. This will automatically progress after 30, 60, or 90 seconds if I don’t click the skip button. There usually at least 2 of these. They appear at the beginning each video in my queue.

My routine is that I queue up several videos then step away from the computer to something in my workshop that will require my hands, sometimes involving stain, shellac, paint, or other things that I don’t want to accidentally transfer my mouse or keyboard. So I consider it a nuisance to have to clean my hands and click the screen, twice, or else just wait a couple of minutes till it goes on by itself.

This had been working for me until a few days ago. Since that time I have deleted everything except password and other login data, tried changing from duckduckgo to google to brave search engines, cycled my vpn, rebooted.

Exact URL of the website in question:

Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no)
I don’t know anything about shields so, i guess, maybe?

Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off?
Don’t know.

Does the ad appear when using a Private window as well? (yes/no)
By this, I assume you mean incognito mode? yes.

What OS are you using when you see the ad?
win 10

Brave version (check About Brave):

Version 1.70.123 Chromium: 129.0.6668.89 (Official Build) (64-bit)

After looking at brave://components

I am unable to update two components which seem to be stuck at 0.0.0.0. All the others tell me that they have the latest version. Maybe if this is fixed the youtube issue will be fixed? Any thoughts, anyone?

@bda I’m assuming might be something related to what is spoken at

But let me tag in @szilardszaloki as I think he was looking into things a bit. Not sure if he’ll DM you for logs or anything.

@bda Mind sharing with me logs in our DM based on Emergency LOST ALL MY PASSWORDS TODAY - #4 by szilardszaloki?

In response to Saoiray…My %localappdata%/Google directory is owned by me:

To szilarddszaloki, I don’t know how to share logs in DM. Please advise.

BTW, I don’t know if this is related, but concurrently I’m attempting to set up Ubuntu via WSL2 access to PIA. sh-ed the linux run file, and eventually got a pia logon form where I entered credentials, but was told “We couldn’t establish the connection to the VPN server. Please get in touch with our support department”. This is while I have my windows PIA connected.

@bda Would you mind checking who the owner of the subfolder (likely 1.0.100) in %localappdata%/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/User Data/mfddibmblmbccpadfndgakiopmmhebop is?

Also the owner of (most probably) 1093 under %localappdata%/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/User Data/PKIMetadata?

Also, in response to previous request:
I entered this command from powershell:

C:/Program Files/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Application/brave.exe" --args --enable-logging --v=1

But when I looked in:

%localappdata%/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/User Data

This file was not found

chrome_debug.log

BTW, I already had brave open and no new window seemed to pop up. Have I done this incorrectly?

Also, my current extensions:

pki metadata
image

1093

Close all Brave windows before launching it from the command line.

ooops

pki metadata

Do you have a subfolder in C:\Users\Broinki\AppData\Local\BraveSoftware\Brave-Browser\User Data\mfddibmblmbccpadfndgakiopmmhebop? If so, could you do a screenshot of it similar to the above?

I got out of all brave windows then ran the

C:/Program Files/BraveSoftware/Brave-Browser/Application/brave.exe" --args --enable-logging --v=1

from the console.

No brave window appeared. No chrome_debug.log file appeared.

BTW, I do still have an edge browser open. Is this an issue?

Who’s the owner and what are the permissions on this one?

Could you try from Command Prompt? You might also be missing the opening ".

  1. close the browser (all its windows)
  2. right click on 1.0.100
  3. Show more options
  4. Properties
  5. Security
  6. Advanced
  7. Change
  8. type in Broinki
  9. click on Check Names (this should bring up your Windows user)
  10. OK
  11. tick the box next to Replace owner on subcontainers and objects
  12. Apply
  13. OK on the window that pops up
  14. OK again (this time on the underlying window — as you need to open it again in order to be able to make changes to the permissions)
  15. Advanced
  16. Change permissions
  17. Add
  18. Select a principal
  19. type in Broinki
  20. click on Check Names (this should bring up your Windows user)
  21. OK
  22. Full control
  23. OK
  24. Apply

If you now have a duplicate for your user (saying None in the Inherited from column):

  1. click on it
  2. Remove
  3. Apply
  4. OK
  5. OK
