Description of the issue:
Platforms: iOS 18.0.1 & iPadOS 18.0.1 & Windows 11 23H2 OS Build 22631.4317
YouTube Live chat messages do NOT send/go through on brave browser. Live chat messages send normally through the YouTube apps, NOT brave browser. Tested on Wi-Fi and cellular.
Edit: Extensions were disabled on iPadOS AND windows 11 and issue persisted
Steps to replicate:
- Go to a YouTube live stream (Lofi Girl has an infinity stream)
- Send a message in the live chat
- Toggle the chat filter OR refresh the page to refresh the chat
- Notice the message you sent will NOT appear
And you can verify you are not banned/timed out by sending a live chat message through the YouTube apps
Additionally, you can check your YouTube live chat message history on windows by going to History > live chat (under Manage all history) to also verify the messages do NOT go through on brave browser, only the YouTube apps.
UPDATE: Testing again today, it appears after roughly 20 messages sent in a live chat, the messages begin failing to send. No extensions, and shields default/off produce the same issue.
Perhaps there’s a send limit? Strange how after a certain amount of messages they begin to fail to go through. Through the YouTube app there is no issue.
Did the issue present with default Shields settings? (yes/no): YES
Does the site function as expected when Shields are turned off? NO
Is there a specific Shields configuration that causes the site to break? If so, tell us that configuration. (yes/no): UNKNOWN
Does the site work as expected when using Chrome? UNKNOWN
Brave version (check About Brave
): Version 1.70.126 Chromium: 129.0.6668.100 (Official Build) (64-bit)
@purelydistinct,
Not sure if there is a chat limit implemented by youtube, although there might be, but on my end I’m able to send live chat messages on YT without any issue. Tested on Windows, macOS and Android.
Is there an error message shown that states that the message you sent failed to send?
Hello,
There is no error message. I tested again today and I was able to send about 20 messages on brave, after those 20 messages they no longer appear. They continue to send through the YouTube apps no issue.
How many messages did you send?
Only a few — on the YT app, were you able to send > 20 messages?
Yes. The messages sent on the YouTube app send and are visible in my live chat history.
I think it might be some kind of limit with the brave browser, that after x amount of messages brave no longer sends the messages
To clarify, I don’t think 20 is an exact amount as after that point I noticed some messages stopped going through, and eventually no more. 20 went through consecutively no issue
So I basically just went in and spammed a live chat (literally told them I was doing product testing — they were very nice to put up with me lol) for 30+ messages and they all went through without issue.
Not sure what’s happening on your end. Going to cc @fanboynz to take a look here as he might know more.
Very strange. Seems unlikely that it might be time related? After a certain amount of time messages no longer send? Thanks for your attention
Added a “test” in chat, showed here
I think it has to do with a certain amount of messages and/or after a certain amount of time watching, messages no longer appear.
That was the channel I used to test before posting and only the messages in the YouTube app sent, not brave browser.
Some channels may have anti-spam scripts setup, does a simple ‘test’ work in other youtube subs?
I also tested in timTheTatman’s stream a day ago and it did not appear in brave, only the YouTube app
And of course messages are sending right now on brave. The inconsistency makes this tough to pinpoint.
Also consider there maybe subscriber only/paying member only chats
Yes, but I’m making sure that these are live chats that I’m allowed to type in. Before you can even chat it tells you the requirements to chat. And I always double checked through the YouTube app to verify that messages can go through
We’re not blocking chat and anything like that. The last issue we had a few months back was a delay in YT chat from showing up, even then that bug didn’t stop users from sharing their thoughts. Does it work in private window mode?
I haven’t used private window mode so unsure. I’ll test that next but it does appear right now my messages are sending. Frustrating I can’t reproduce it when it matters
Is there a way I can monitor the network traffic when I send a message? A way I can see if the message is being blocked from sending?
Given its probably encrypted due to the https. Private window mode is in the top hamburger menu. Then just re-login into the private window session
tldr; If you can send a chat on Lofi girl’s chat, (after subscribing). Then it’ll work elsewhere.
