YouTube limited to 360p on iOS Brave

,

Description of the issue: Brave iOS YouTube videos are limited to 360p quality

How can this issue be reproduced?

  1. Enable “Web Compatibility” option in Playlist settings (needed for Playlist autosave to work)
  2. Launch any video, example
  3. Check quality using gear icon on Youtube, max is 360p
  4. Try other browsers like Safari or Chrome on iOS, same video, max is 1080p

Expected result: 1080p on Brave

Brave Version( check About Brave): 1.67

Mobile Device details iOS 17.5

Additional Information:

@shehata I just tested on my iPhone using iOS 17.6 and Brave 1.67 (127). I wasn’t able to replicate your issue as you can see in the screenshot, it played at 1080.

I’m not sure if it’s a setting in Shields making the difference, if you might need to clear cookies/cache (at least for YouTube), or what?

Hi Saoiray, thanks for your reply,

Please make sure you “Enable Web Compatibility” in Playlist settings first to reproduce

Thanks for adding that. I now see the same as you mention. So the only time this happens is with that Web Compatibility option enabled, which it clearly stats disables the WebKit MediaSource API.

If I’m understanding things properly, this would make sense as that API is what’s used for streaming videos. We’re disabling a tool meant to provide higher quality streaming with less resources.

But I guess let me tag in @michal on this and hope he can advise on 2 things:

  1. Should Playlist settings be impacting content being used outside of Playlist? (such as just viewing videos on YouTube)

  2. Does it make sense that toggling Web Compatibility to turn off WebKit MediaSource API would then prevent videos from being played higher than 360p?

I’m going to bump this topic on the grounds that I’ve been experiencing this exact thing under iPadOS for a long while, now.

Honestly, I’ve never been able to get the right video quality settings for as long as I’ve been using Brave. Auto has always worked just fine (on Desktop Mode only), but the highest quality I’ve been able to select manually was 720p30. Quite recently, though, the only option I’ve been getting was 360p.

It doesn’t matter if Web Compatibility is enabled or disabled (I’ve never had it enabled to begin with…), YouTube only gives me the choice of 360p for video quality on both Desktop Mode and Mobile Mode, these days. As mentioned, though, I also get the option of “Auto” in Desktop Mode, which will give me the highest possible quality regardless. No such luck in Mobile Mode.

I’d really love to know why this is happening and if it can be fixed. As mentioned by the original poster, this isn’t a problem with any other web browser on i(Pad)OS… but then, no other web browser on i(Pad)OS is actively blocking YouTube ads, either. (I could never figure out how to do it on Safari.) So…

Hi, similarly this 360p issue is present for me only when I try to airplay a video to my AppleTV, without airplay I get all the quality options.

For the longest time 720p was available for airplay, but for some time now this for some reason downgraded to 360p, making the Brave → YT-Airplay combo basically unusable! :frowning:
